Thanks for posting the links to those articles IDonT. I've just skimmed them a little, but they're looking good so far. I've read about some proposals for 150,000 tons CVs in the past, and it is an intriguing idea. Such a large vessel could go a long way in both restoring the offensive power of the carrier as well as provide space for a sufficient number of fixed-wing ASW. I also find the 35-year life cycle for a proposed carrier to be a good idea, as it allows the Navy to forgo SLEPs and simply build a brand new ship with the latest improvements already built-in, and not just tacked-on or simply foregone.

Great pics popeye. If you look at the deck plating in the penultimate photo you can see where Hermes starboard catapult used to be (removed during her 1971-73 conversion to LPH). The Sea Harrier is parked on the top of what used to be her CALE aircraft positioning gear.

My understanding is that Singapore, Australia, and Japan all also participated in these exercises with the US and India. Very major exercise and rasising a lot of eyebrows.

Joint carrier operations with India, for the US, is, IMHO, good thing.

I saw a pic of the newer Formidable Class FFGs in these exercises. Very, very capable frigate.

IMHO, these exercises almost deserve a thread of their own. Here's a nice pic of Japan, Singapore, Inidan, and US surface combatants sailing in formation.

Any or all of those would make very nice escorts in any CSG.

Ithink this is great. It shows the interoperable capablities of those navies. Great sprit of cooperation.

great pics

Indeed, if after the Falklands anyone who said that Hermes would be in service after Invincible would have been certified. :( It is great to see Shars still flying, hopefully Hermes/Viraat and the Shars can give the Indian Navy many more years of good service. The way their replacement carrier programmes are going they're going to need it!

The Hermes/Viraat is amazing..in comission(mostly) since 1959. Did you fellows know that her keel was laid in 1944?!. Amazing that she still sails the sea. A testimony to the British who built and mainatined her and the Indians who now maintain her. How much longer can she go? Only time will tell!

On to another subject. Presently the USS Wasp LHD-1 is conducting a disaster relief mission in Nicarauga.

U.S. Southern Command diverted the Wasp from an international maritime exercise in Panama to the coast of Nicaragua Sept. 5 to assist with disaster relief efforts in areas affected by Hurricane Felix. This shows the great versitility of this class of ship. The Wasp was in the region participatiing in PANAMAX 2007. The ship has an air wing on board of US Navy CH-53 Sea Dragons and SH-60's.

Of course some pics for you!
