Soon now...soon.

Another large aircraft carrier (another refurbished Russian carrier) will soon be in the water and plowing the waves.

It's interesting to see this...who would have though back in 1993 or 1994 that the old Gorshkov or the laid up Varyag would ever have been completely refitted and become main line carriers fo nations like China and India?

I would not have thought so...and yet here we are.

Yes its very interesting indeeed, and although I always liked Aircraft Carriers, as the AFB, I kinda thought Carriers were passe, and archaic, and to see this build-up and the race to take to the high seas in the Far East is very enlightening. Quite frankly, I have to give Jeff and Bd the real credit for educating me and kind of drawing me in, thanks for the great answers and intriquing questions to the rest of my brothers her on Sino Defense, most of all thank you for your kind patience, and all these wonderfull conversations you can't have with your lovely wife. To see these fancy chicks restored to their intended purpose is almost archaelogical preservation Jeff, and indeed history in the making.

INS Vikramaditya will take to the sea for crucial pre-induction trials on June 8, Russian shipbuilding sources said.

Last month, the trials were put off by two weeks due to bad weather alerts.

However, the delay will not affect the scheduled delivery of the aircraft carrier to the Indian Navy in December, according to the Sevmash shipyard, where the Soviet-era Admiral Gorshkov carrier has undergone modernisation and repairs.

“We are confident that we will hand over the vessel to India on December 4, Navy Day,” said Sevmash Director-General Andrei Dyachkov.

Huntington Ingalls Industries announced June 5th that its Ingalls Shipbuilding division launched the U.S. Navy's next amphibious assault ship, America (LHA 6), from the company's floating drydock on Monday.

"Launching a large-deck ship is a significant milestone requiring several highly skilled shipyard crafts and a complex logistics plan," said Brian Cuccias, Ingalls' vice president, large deck amphibious ships. "As the Navy's longtime sole provider of these important ships, we are unique in our ability to draw on the specialized experience our shipbuilders have in the safe and efficient translation and launch of a warship of this size."

The ship, weighing more than 29,000 tons in its current state, became one of the largest objects moved across land when it was translated to the drydock two weeks ago. Following additional planning and preparation, the launch process occurred utilizing the drydock's ballast system on Monday afternoon, and the ship floated free.

Ingalls Shipbuilding Launches America

GREAT video. I knew it was soon but am glad to see it. Another large capital ship for the US Navy and US Marines. With Sea Control carrier capability to augment the super carriers when needed and to perform OTH Marine assaul when not. Great vessel. The LHA-7 Tripoli will be started building in her place ASAP.

Obi Wan, this one is for you. Here's how the UK celebrated the coronation of the Queen in 1953:

Count the carriers. This was back when Her Majesty's Fleet was still very large and very revelant.

Article about how the review of the Queen's Navy was not even a part of the proceedings this time...becaue of the embarrasment of not even being able to mass a dozen ships for it.

Sad that the UK has squandered such strength to wasteful and black hole social programs that coddle people and pay them for not working and generate a mountain of debt to the point where the common defense is pilfered.

We are doing the same in the US, though we may turn it around again this November, as we did in November of 1980.

Wow, great pic Jeff, that is really massive. And sad to see how far things have declined in europe generally. Only one full fledged carrier left over here.
Btw, anyone here having any knowledge of how things may go on in France regarding a PA2 after the election? Is a decision still outstanding, and if so what does the timetable look like? Or is the project pretty much dead for now?

The Vikramaditya has left port.

I really like this picture of her being moved away by the tugs. Shows some good view of her flight deck as well as the island and spaces around it.

She cleaned up pretty nicely and as I have said, since the Mig-29Ks are already available, I expect her initial air operations (perhaps not qualifications) will occur before they do on the ex-Varyag. But time will tell.

Is that the Admiral Nakhimov, Kirov class nuclear cruiser in refit behind her?
