I agree Franklin, these guys are the greatest, they can disagree with out you even knowing it, and theres certainly nothing wrong with being proud of your country, your people, or your equipment, and discussing and listening to some of the real experts like Jeff and BD discuss carriers and naval equipment in general has given me a new appreciation for lots of things I used to take for granted. Cheers Brat

Radar mast. not an uncommon sight on carriers, US Nimitz class and others had one too abaft the island. Simply put, a carrier's island is somewhat restricted in space compared to a destroyer or frigate and sometimes you have to add a mast, hopefully out of the way of parked aircraft on deck.

Re: Aircraft Carriers

Regarding the CV mast.. did you know that all Forrestal class CVs mast were hinged as to allow for passage under bridges?particularly in New York where the Saratoga and Independence were built.

It's quite a sight, and I'd hate to be the sailor who had to (hand crank) that mast back to the vertical! the sort of prank experienced sailors might be tempted to pull on new recruits (not telling them there is an electric winch as well!).

Re: Aircraft Carriers

Another note is that both the Kitty Hawk and Constellation were built in New York. They also were built with retractable mast.

Builders trials, 21–24 February 1961. Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) heads out to sea for trials (NS0263bg), at sea on trials (NS0263bga), and returning from sea trials (NS0263bgb).

USS Constellation (CVA-64) about to pass under the Brooklyn Bridge, 12 July 1962, as she leaves Brooklyn, New York, bound for her new homeport, San Diego, California. Note Connie's tilted mast, and the city of New York in the background.

Re: Aircraft Carriers

Outstanding to learn that. I had no idea, I would assume it would have some substantial pins locking it vertically as well as the hinge pin on the bottom.
