Re: Aircraft Carriers

We probably should ignore the political portions so as not to drift away from the purpose of SD and invite (and rightflly so) the mods to step in.

Exactly.. Stay on topic.

Re: Aircraft Carriers

Wow, if not looking from USN way of categorization, USN really has 20+ carriers.
Right now there are:

10 Nimitz
01 Enterprize
01 Tarawa
08 Wasp

So ninteen large deck carriers. When Enterprize is decommissioned, it will drop to eighteen until this vessel, the USS America is commissioned.

Sea trials of the Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier being overhauled for the Indian navy at the Sevmash shipyard in northern Russia have been postponed until the beginning of June, the shipyard said on Wednesday.

The purchase of the Soviet-built Admiral Gorshkov was agreed in 2005 but delivery to India has been long delayed. The cost of refurbishing the aircraft carrier, to be renamed INS Vikramaditya, has since gone up from $947 million to $2.3 billion.

“The start of the sea trials has been moved to the beginning of June,” a Sevmash spokesman said.

The vessel was originally scheduled to sail for trials in the White Sea and the Barents Sea on May 25.

The delay could have been caused by poor weather forecast in the trials area next week, the official said.

The delivery of the Admiral Gorshkov to the Indian navy is expected in December 2012.

Well, that's only a couple of weeks away. I hope we get some good pics of her leaving port. She will be a nce, much more modern addition to the indain Navy capabilities, particularly with their indegenous carrier coming along in a few more months itself.

Cottage, it is against Forum rules to disparage and talk down regrding other nationalities or races. it just invites the same back and causes arguements. Just warning you, because you are likely to attract moderator attention if you keep making such comments.

As to India's Vikramaditya, here's some of the latest pictures of her posted on my

See more at the linked site. She is scheduled for Sea Trials beginning in June and hand over to the Indian Navy in December.

My guess is that the Indian Navy, who already have taken delivery of and are training with their first production wing og Mig-29K aircraft, will have her commissioned and operating with a full wing of aircraft off of her decks before the Chinese carrier is ready to do the same. That's because:

1) They already have the aircraft.
2) They already have decades of experience operating fixed wing aircraft off of carrier decks.
