Does anyone have any new photos of the carrier Sao Paulo? I am eager to see what she looks like with her new refit and weapon systems. Plus when is she due to embark her new air wing? I am also wondering if her A-4's are done with their upgrade? I do know Marsh Aviation was to upgrade S-2 Turbo Trackers to AEW standard and a couple to Tanker standard.

Here's a link..with a recent (November) video. But it's in Portuguese.

Me again. :D Do you good people happen to know how many crew cabins does a nimitz class carrier have? And how large are they? (square meters overall, ceiling height) How many sailors/air crew are housed per cabin, on average?

This pic is the standard room for sailors onboard British Type 45 destroyer. CVF rooms are said to be planned of same standard. How would you compare the comfort level, luxury, overall space space to the nimitz accomodation?

The USN does not have such luxurious accommodations for it's enlisted men. Even the most senior ones. The RN an many other navies have the USN beat as far as berthing accommodations are concerned.

As originally designed Nimitz class CVNs have berthing for 5,700 sailors. Officer & enlisted.

On a Nimitz class lower enlisted men(E-6 and below) are berthed in compartments ranging in size from 18 racks(bunks) to 220 racks. As you can read the size varies greatly.

E-7 to E-9 (Chief petty officers) accomidations are some what smaller housing 6 to 12 CPO's.

Junior officers accommodations are similar to the ones on the RN Type45 DDGs.

Senior officers have a state room all to themselves. Captains and Admirals have very fine staterooms.

The ceilings(overhead) on USN ships are right about 12' feet (3.6m) high. You have to remember that there are all sorts of pipes, vents and wiring located in that overhead.

Go to the US military photo thread for an inside view of a Nimitz class. Page 31 is a good place to start.

http://www.sinodefenceforum.com/world-military-pictures/us-military-pictures-thread-31-1975.html

Accommodations on a Nimitz class are fine. Nimitz class ships have gyms, stores, barber shops, library, chapel and other ementites for the entire crew.

I spent 7 months on the Nimitz in 1991.

If there's any doubt the RN QE2 Class CVF will be built.. Here's the first photo of one of the modules under construction by a sub-contractor in Scotland.

Thanks, Popeye. I must say it is a huge surprise that Nimitz has sleeping compartments for 220 people!!! I thought such practice was abandoned right about after ww2. Would i be correct to assume there can't be any sort of luxury there, concerning private space and such? Every sailor get a bed and a locker and that's it?

With ceilings being 3.6 meters high, even with pipes and what not, it's perhaps doable of putting triple bunk beds in there? That way the room for 220 people could perhaps be kept under 300 square meters in size...

And that CVF pic - wow, I didn't think carriers had such flat bottoms... Doesnt that mess up their stability at high seas?

In truth, Britain deserves 2 more carriers of the Queen Elizabeth class, and up to 2 dozen ASTUTE boats, up to 12 Daring class destroyers, and 30 Frigates to replace its current 2 classes. Plus to add the icing on the cake, 1 more OCEAN class LPH. Its good to see the ships under construction. Plus the RN deserves to have its own planes, not airforce shared planes. What are defense planners thinking? The same strategy of the 70's where they thought the RAF could provide air cover for the RN?

Nope. Most ride very well. They ride very nicely. Very liitle movement felt.

You are welcome. Remember those are the very largest berthing compartments. Some are as small as 12 sailors.

Not much privacy. You get use to it. Better than living in a foxhole and eating an MRE. On board ships it's always air conditioned. Hot showers and hot food.

Check out the photos below to give you some Idea about berthing. It has not changed much in 60 years for the USN

These new racks are being installed on USN ships..minus the wheels. Recruits in boot camp are the first to use them.

Older style racks still installed on most USN ships. Most ships racks have curtains for privacy. These are on the ex-USS Midway. Now a museum ship in San Diego CA

Great pics Popeye. Sorry I haven't been around much lately, just started a new job. Week one was 74 hours in total! Week 2... isn't over yet!;) anyway, as regards RN accomodation, here's a pic of crew berthing aboard HMS Ocean; there appears to be more locker space for one thing. Good to see progress on the QE, there appears to be a real impetus to the programme if for no other reason than to remove from the next government the option of cancellation. Almost all of the subcontracts have been placed now, even for items which will not be required for a few years. Right now the cheapest option will be to build them!
