That's crappy and unprofessional conduct for an olympic level coach. A coach should always have his athlete's back. If I was training under him, I would look for a new coach. Since the judge made the a mistake, Chinese Olympic committee should have at least filed an official protest disputing the result. Otherwise, it makes much easier for similar misjudgments to stand against Chinese winter team in the future as PRC wouldn't make any fuzz

Besides, there is precedent for awarding gold medals to athletes losing first place due to judging mistakes. Canadian figure skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier got their gold medals after the figure skating judging scandal in Salt Lake Olympics.

You have to keep in mind that Su Yiming is a young athlete who is just starting out. If it is his last outing then by all means challenge as hard as you can. But snow boarding is a small circle and pressing too hard could potentially make enemies and introduce problems during later events. I think it is a shrewd and mature move on the part of Su and his coach to be honest.

PRC Olympic teams will always be put under a microscope given the current political environment. Personally, I don't think it's worth it doing nothing for fear of retaliation in later events. Since this case is clearly in PRC's favour, protesting it might actually deter other malicious misjudgments. Not to mention, it's highly likely the supposed goodwill generated from this concession would fall on deaf ears. The whole thing could later become another case of PRC making sacrifice for nothing.

Mystery of South Korean team’s antagonism towards Beijing Olympics solved!

The reigning men’s 1,500 metres short track Olympic champion was last year found guilty of sexual harassment after being accused of pulling down a male colleague's trousers in front of female teammates in 2019.
Victim in question was Gold Medalist hwang dae hoon. But wait, there is more.
In March, Lim reportedly applied for Chinese citizenship to allow him to compete at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Su Yiming's coach wants everyone to "let it go" and forgive the judges. He understands how difficult it is to judge on the fly and both he and Su have reached an understanding with the judges.

Can they give Su an honorary gold medal.

Or nudge the Canadian to relinquish his gold for silver since his own country's judge screwed up.

Surely if your own countryman screwed up and gave you an award you didn't deserve, you should ask to relinquish that award?

I tot Canadians were the 'nice guys' of Planet Earth. Let's see how gentlemanly and sportmanslike or how prideful they r

As someone from Canada and a fellow hockey player, most Canadian comments (removing the politics) are pleasantly surprised at the result. Realistically, Canadian spectators were expecting something closer to 0-15 or 0-20, so 0-8 is actually above expectations.

However its important to know that this was not the A team, or even B or C team the US fielded. Basically Canada and US are in this Olympics with their hands behind their backs because the NHL is not sending players, as Omicron has already battered the NHL season. Had an NHL level team been sent, there was no way China would have held America to single digits.

Russia actually has a good chance this time, mostly because as a result of the NHL decision, 2 top peers are knocked out as well as some Scandinavian powerhouses since the majority of thier top players are also in the NHL.

China's future in men's hockey however is actually quite promising (vs soccer), if the government decides to invest wisely. This is because China also has a Beijing team in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, which is widely considered the second strongest hockey league in the world after the NHL. KHL has decent levels of funding and viewership, and includes other hockey powers like Latvia and Finland. If China can get a reasonable number of other teams (ie.4-5) established in the KHL, there would result a reasonable feeder system to get home-grown talent up to global levels.

The issue right now is that the majority of China's players are passport Canadians, which if you consider the low portion of Chinese Canadians in Canada who play hockey, means they are drawing half the team from a population of probably under 200,000 people. Funnelling domestic talent through Russia's KHL is an absolutely doable and safe olympic strategy. While overall teams in NHL are still much stronger than KHL, at the individual level there are NHL players who sometimes join the KHL and some top KHL players also end up in the NHL.
What is the best way to follow Kunlun Red Star on TV? Is there a free way to watch their games on KHL? Sounds fun.

Hopefully more China teams join as you mention. Maybe one from Urumqi, one from Harbin etc etc

Hopefully China can set up its own domestic hockey league in due time.

Who is Lizzi? hope not that guy lilzzyman aka
She probably turned into a Chinese nationalist after reading those reddit threads and online forums just like me. It probably made her decision to ditch US citizenship a lot easier knowing your Chinese upbringing will never let you be full accepted in US society.
While the African American community accepted Obama as one of their own, most of White America did not feel that same way, even though we know Obama is exactly 50/50 of half white half black.

During the worst period of slavery, Jim Crow era in the US, not only were blacks considered 1/3 of a full person (or at least their vote was 1/3 of a white person's vote) but in fact in a lot of cases even someone of 1/8th black was still considered as black even though they were 7/8th white....

I think Gu is smart enough to see which way the wind blows, sure she is no Ray Dalio but it doesnt take a rocket scientists to figure out that things will only get much more hostile to ethnic Chinese in America going forward. Why waste your talent fighting for a nation that will never truly accept you nor love you back

It's only the Chinese that like this mascot...

I saw some American athlete worried watching how other medal winners were getting those special Bing Dwen Dwen gifts at the podium and some were not. He was more excited to eventually get one than the medal when he won.
