Although it was not called "citizenship", a foreigner can not travel through, settle down or purchase property anywhere inside the border of the Chinese empire, nor can a subject of the Chinese emperor leave the empire without permissions. In essence it is citizenship.

One example is that the European missionaries had to wait inside the dedicated area in Guangzhou for permission to travel to Beijing to meet the emperor during the Ming Dynasty.

Another example is that in folklore Xuan Zang carried a "通关碟文" stating that he is the subject of Tang (dynasty) and asking for the assistance of government of Kingdoms on his way to modern day India. That is the same statement in a passport. But in reality he smuggled himself out of the country, that proves that he did need a paper to leave and then enter. That paper is just passport.

Those were more subjects, than modern citizenship. It is stretching too far, interesting they may be.

In any case, I have clarified my reference to historical root. This is going way off topic. Let's end it here.

"The thing that really caught me off guard was the amount of hate I had. I was 15 years old and had death threats – hundreds of DMs [direct messages] from people saying terrible things that a 15-year-old shouldn’t have to read. It was like a car crash – you couldn’t look away. You keep looking for more and I knew it was hurting me but I couldn’t stop. “So I found Reddit threads and it was endless. Once you start looking for hate, it’s endless. It’s easy to say ‘just don’t listen to it’, but when you’re 15 – or any age – to receive that amount of negativity, nobody can handle it in an easy and mature way. I guarantee it would affect anybody.”

Well, I hope they are proud of themselves…

She probably turned into a Chinese nationalist after reading those reddit threads and online forums just like me. It probably made her decision to ditch US citizenship a lot easier knowing your Chinese upbringing will never let you be full accepted in US society.

Reading R/China should be mandatory for Asian American children past the age of 10.

Su Yiming's coach wants everyone to "let it go" and forgive the judges. He understands how difficult it is to judge on the fly and both he and Su have reached an understanding with the judges.

That's crappy and unprofessional conduct for an olympic level coach. A coach should always have his athlete's back. If I was training under him, I would look for a new coach. Since the judge made the a mistake, Chinese Olympic committee should have at least filed an official protest disputing the result. Otherwise, it makes much easier for similar misjudgments to stand against Chinese winter team in the future as PRC wouldn't make any fuzz

Besides, there is precedent for awarding gold medals to athletes losing first place due to judging mistakes. Canadian figure skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier got their gold medals after the figure skating judging scandal in Salt Lake Olympics.
