To be honest you can tell she leans way more toward an american girl than a chinese girl in terms of culture.

Still, hoping she keeps chinese citizenship otherwise it'll become a whole controversy

That's what would happen if you made a deal in violation of law on an exception basis. Why not just modify the nationality law and publish to the public. Then everyone follows the same law. There wouldn't be any embarrassment or controversy, 'cause everyone knows the rule of the game.

Instead, it's become an awkward situation: on the one hand you want to claim the glory and excitement of the medals, on the other hand you're struggling to explain to people internally the double-standard while at a loss to answer pretty obvious question externally. What makes it even more ironic is that what they do (recruiting external talents with different citizenship) is not even all that exceptional among countries. It's the way they manage affair and evade the question that makes them exceptional.

At the end of the day law serves hegemony (or is meant to) not the other way around. (just ask the Natives)

If I judged the only way to avoid a deadly car accident is to purposefully run a red light, I would run the red light even if there was a cop sitting right there.

Perhaps the Chinese gov weighed that if someone is good enough to claim multiple gold medals for China then they are worth making an exception for... nothing wrong with that, China is at a critical juncture against hostile US hegemony, no need for it to self handicap by following its own laws to the letter (something the US itself never does) to its own detriment

Now that the Olympics is concluded, it's a really good time for the govt to modify the citizenship law to make it more suitable for the present day. Have to patch this weakpoint in the law so this issue won't be hounded by western media again.

I read somewhere that the West was expecting the Beijing Winter Olympics to be China's Fyre Island, a complete disaster on how the event was operated. Now all they got was spinning how dull it was. Where was the outbreak of COVID-19 they were wishing to happen and spread across the China? US politicians wanted athletes to speak up and they only got were cowardly attention seeking foreign athletes that didn't saying anything until the end and out of the spotlight of their event. You think American athletes wanted to end up in a Chinese prison that US politicians wanted to see happen in their widest fantasies so they can use that in their propaganda? It was their failure that nothing they wanted to see happen occurred at all.

Hearing some chatter within China the government and by extension Chinese media will distance themselves from Eileen Gu post this Olympics, similar to a Kawhi Leonard for Toronto Raptors kind of deal. At the end of the day she's returning to Stanford and won't be giving up her US citizenship, and her legality will always be an issue. She has just under 2 yrs left on her Chinese travel permit before she needs to formally decide, so a lot can happen in the meantime. I hope it's not the case case and she fully returns, but bookmarking this just in case.

It is good that they are preparing mainland Chinese for such scenario. If Eileen Gu does choose to represent the US, then it is also perfectly fine too. Of course, Eileen Gu would no longer enjoy the support and sponsors and money if she gave up her Chinese citizenship. That's why China has been asking the entertainment industry to declare the nationality so people couldn't pretend to be Chinese citizens and reap the benefits.
In all honesty Eileen doesn't really have to give up either of her nationalities, or renounce either one for that matter.

Just because she's a Chinese national doesn't preclude her from being a US citizen, only that jurisdictionally China won't recognise her US citizenship whenever she steps foot on Chinese soil, so she can't rely on US diplomatic protection by virtue of her being a US citizen, and legally she'd be treated the same as any legal Chinese national.

It was such a failure that over 2000 athletes decided to stay for the closing ceremony, a new Winter Olympics record. They anticipated 600 would attend but so many people loved Beijing so much that they decided to stay.
And that's only the ones that were allowed to stay for the ceremony. Many had already left within 48 hours of completing their competitions.

After 2020 I’ve pretty much reached the conclusion that with the exception of men’s soccer, anything China wishes to accomplish, it does so with flying colors.

It isn't like that. China doesn't allow dual citizenship. Therefore, Eileen Gu has to renounce her US citizenship if she wanted to keep her Chinese citizenship.

Is it true that China is the first country ever in the world that has been the host of both the Summer and Winter Olympics?
