Germans are very good drivers. The commentators said it umpteenth times.

You can have a lackluster start at sledding but if you drive extremely well you can still come out tops.

Germans being good at driving in general is no surprise.

The Latvian Dukurs brothers Tomass and Martins not performing well is surprising. They are perhaps the greatest sledders of all time. But they are now around 40 years old.
It must be more than that surely. And it doesn't involve alot of driving, there isn't even a steering wheel. More like directing the sled lol

Just watched alysa liu finished skating her short program. Thought she looked mixed Chinese and had a look at her bio. Very interesting to say the least.
Liu was born on August 8, 2005, in Clovis, California, the oldest child of Arthur Liu, an attorney who immigrated to the U.S.from a small mountain village in Sichuan, China in the 1990s at the age of 25, after earning degrees in China. He was further educated in California, earning M.B.A. and J.D. degrees.[2][3] Alysa Liu is the oldest of five children; like her siblings (a sister, Selina, and triplets Jaylin, Justin, and Julia), she was conceived through an anonymous egg donor and a surrogate mother.[4] At the time of Liu's birth, her father was still married to Yan "Mary" Qingxin, whom Liu and her siblings refer to as their mom, and who acts as their legal guardian, even after her divorce from Arthur.[5]

That's a lie. Zhu Yi became a Chinese citizen and was selected for Olympics qualification spot before her father even returned from abroad.
I see. Thanks for clarification. I see some comments still dissing her. I dun think it matters. If her dad makes a significant contribution to the scientific achievements in China, it's all worth it anyway. Whether or not she deserves her spot..

Today was pretty dramatic in 2 finals that didn't involve china..
First in biathlon men's event, Russians were leading by clear distance but the last guy inexplicably messed up when he missed 4 of 5 shots. From the clear gold medal position they fell to bronze and gave it away to Norway. Quite incredible.

And in speed skating women's team pursuit, the world record holder japan, were on the way for gold in final lap but their third skater inexplicably made an error and slid off track, giving the gold to Canadian team. Very bizarre, both so close to finishing with gold in dominating position. I think the Japanese girl was in tears at the end.

You said Cheng Hong Yi could have done better. She did not qualify? So Zhu Yi was not actually better, but just happened to perform better in those qualification competition?
My initial understanding was Chen qualified for the Olympics and gave the spot to Zhu based on weibo comments. But I guess I was wrong.

How could that happen if Zhu did not qualify for herself? If both are good enough to qualify, than both should participate.

You can use your toes, your knees, your feet, your body, your shoulders to change the weight of the sled. As the commentators said, if you just lie straight, your sled will keep banging the walls. The track is designed so that you must shift your body constantly to avoid drifting your sled to the walls. The sledders have smooth flowing slides because they keep adjusting their bodies. They're professionals. But even then they quite often hit the walls, losing time. You just don't see the micro movements of their bodies in real time.

The track is intentionally designed to prevent easy sliding to the bottom.

So each country can pick whichever athlete if the country qualifies for a spot? what is the qualification process?
