He is extremely talented, speaks Chinese, English and Japanese, acts and plays guitar, very composed for his age, and has a high EQ from all we can tell. His parents should really be very proud of the kid.

I'm more familiar with the Olympic archery qualifications since I do archery myself, but yes the qualification for Olympics and Olympics itself can be done by separate athletes. Typically qualification is based on some sort of score, which are obtained by doing well in the relevant World Cups, Continental Games (Pan Ams, Asian Games, etc.), and other major international events. Having enough points from these events will earn the national team a number of spots. It is up to the national team to decide who to bring to the actual Olympics.
Usually the qualification points are earned in the events the year before, and leading up to the Olympics. National teams will hold trials for the Olympics itself once it has earn the spots. It is possible that the athlete that earned the spot the year before may not be in his/her best form for the Olympics, so someone else would take the spot, which is why there are usually separate Olympics trials.
Eh... You can kinda tell after he won gold he's not into nationalism like most other chinese athletes. Felt like he was just half heartedly waving the flag and just wanted to go back to listen to linkin park in his room or something
