Japan is winning mostly in categories where judging is important. They won like 8 Judo medals or something. Brazilians and Russians are complaining about it being rigged.
I read like 9 gold medals at least from judo. That's insane.

China silver in 100m medley mixed relay. I want to watch the replay, not sure who they assigned for breaststroke and freestyle. Xu definitely for back and chen for butterfly. Nice surprise I thought bronze is tough ask akready.

I am surprised by high medal counts from both China and Japan. I would have expected Japan to cannibalize some medals from China since they are strong in broadly similar sports. Other east asian countries are also making strong showings, with multiple countries getting first gold medals or first medals. I can't confirm, but logically the medal collapse should be coming from Europe/North America.

It wouldn't be surprising if China came 1-2 with Japan considering what we have seen so far, I'm more intrigued by the possibility US might only come 3rd.
They tried to defeat China in mens and womens table tennis, but all their individual players crashed out. They only won the mixed doubles. Most of Japan's badminton events did not perform as expected. Wang Shun's 200IM gold destroyed 2 major Japanese swimmers Seto and Hagino.

Yes in table tennis despite the mixed gold they performed below expected. Same in badminton. Tennis you could say Osaka failed badly but Nishikori performed to expectation.

It's in other sports they did really well. Two golds in skating boarding? wat the!

If you look at gold medals, over half of US gold medals is Swimming....over half of Japan's gold medal's Judo..... whereas Chinese golds are fairly evenly distributed across multiple disciples and sports (weight lifting, swimming, shooting, diving, etc..), China has depth AND breath.

Japan is (largely) a one-trick pony dominating Judo (skill-based combat sport with subjective judging) with 9 gold medals (insane). US is pretty reliant on Swimming (physical-based sport with objective measurements, but significant gold medal opportunity due to large number of permutations of events). Track and field is opening up so US has a chance to diversify it's gold medal count in next week.

Update. The American swimmer messed up her goggles came off lol. I was wondering why they did so bad hahaha. No way they can appeal this result. Wat a great silver.

And props to Chen Yufei. She is a beast swimmer. Yesterday she swam the 200 butterfly a notoriously tough race and then the 4x200m relay. Even got both golds. Today she swam the 50m heat and the MMR final. No doubt she is china's elite swimmer now.

Men singles badminton
Shi Yuqi lost to Axelsen. Chen Long vs Taipei yet to start

Seems like China's dominance in badminton has really fallen

Good news is women doubles (wo cao woman) has entered the finals
Shi Yuqi lost to Axelsen is expected. After Momota lost, Axelsen is the favorite to win the gold medal. On the other hand, Shi Yugi just recovered from injury and has never done well against Axelsen before.

I think people have the illusion that China badminton team dominates badminton like the table tennis team does to table tennis. Except 2012 London, China has never sweep all 5 badminton gold medals. It is only due to Lin Dan that everyone overestimates China's domination. Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea and Denmark all have many great players and have dominated badminton before. The rise of Japanese and Taiwanese players also made badminton much more competitive. Let just say the Chinese badminton team has already exceeded everyone expectation.
