I think China should focus on developing quality athletes in popular sports like football, tennis, athletics, swimming etc. Investment in these sports will attract more eyeballs and good PR and goodwill for nation as well. Quantity of medals count nothing after 1 week of completion of olympics. Most people don’t even care about diving, TT, weightlifting. Even a bench player in football is more popular than multiple gold medle in TT. I remember XI is huge fan of football and China have huge plans to be a good footballing nation.
Football requires a comprehensive grassroot program and a local football culture for it to develop. The absence of the latter is the reason Asia never became a football powerhouse despite the massive population.
The only 2 World Class players Asia ever produced were both South Korean, Park Ji Sung and Son.

I don't think China wants to have the football hooliganism that soccer for some strange reasons tends to have; anyone remember when the world cup went to south korea and you had idiot expat football hooligans being themselves in Seoul.

They already have naturalized Brazilians and mixed Chinese players on the Chinese national football team. Making it to the world cup is of high priority.

The US won pretty fairly. No need for bitterness. Congrats to the United States. The result of the Olympics won't change the course of China US power struggles. It is more of a moral booster.
If the Indians could take some swimming medals from the US, that would be nice.

Nah. No need to congratulate the US. They will never do the same if China won. They will make cheating accusations against Chinese athletes and try to get gold medalists disqualified for wearing a Mao badge. No need to be nice to a country that is actively trying to destroy you.
