Yes the Crimea is a done deal. They are going to vote for Independence and ask Russia to be their protectorate.

You mean Russia is going to ensure that they vote for independence. There is a noisy pro-Russian group, but it's not clear a majority of Crimeans want independence under Russian rule. Of course Putin will make sure that the only observers are biased in his favour. Don't expect the UN or EU to be involved in overseeing any vote.

I have the feeling Putin has waited a long time for this...and Obama and other weak leaders are handing it to him on a silver platter.

Anyhow, sorry for the rant. We have a bunch of nitwits running America right now...and we are going to pay for it ( and anyone who has historically depended on us is also going to pay for it) until we get some adults back in charge.

/end rant

What really bothers me is that whilst western leaders are utilizing Twitter and other social media in an attempt to develop popular support; the adults in this game are taking action.

I mean no offence and take no joy in saying this, but I believe that Putin had a good laugh after listening to Mr. Obama’s warning. Especially after the “I can be more flexible” comment.

I can see putin's concerns. Like plawof said the last thing he wants is Ukraine joining NATO or buddy buddy with the EU that sometime in the future the US puts an ABM shield there. Crimea is his most pressing goal however he will not let Ukraine become an EU puppet state. He prefers to be the puppet master and do not intend to share his backyard with EU let alone the US.

He'll have to share it with emerging Turkey which surely can be friend/foe in the blink of an eye in 10-20 years perspective with an army which will surely be able stand up to whatever Russia will try in this area.

RT.COM said:
Ukraine’s Navy flagship, the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, has reportedly refused to follow orders from Kiev, and come over to Russia’s side and is returning home after taking part in NATO operation in the Gulf of Aden flying the Russian naval flag.

There has been conflicting information on where exactly the vessel is, but a Russian senator has confirmed to Izvestia daily that the frigate defected to the Russian side.

“Ukraine’s Navy flagship the Hetman Sahaidachny has come over to our side today. It has hung out the St Andrew’s flag,” Senator Igor Morozov, a member of the committee on the international affairs, told Izvestia daily.

He said the flagship is on its way back to the Black Sea after drills in the Mediterranean. “The crew has fulfilled the order by the chief commander of Ukraine’s armed forces Viktor Yanukovich,” he added.

The move comes after the Navy command resigned Friday. Self-appointed President Aleksandr Turchinov made Rear Admiral Denis Berezovsky the new Navy Chief, a statement published on the President’s website Saturday said.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Prime Minister of Ukraine had earlier asked his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan not to let the frigate through the Bosporus strait, according to the Kiev Times. The ship captain and the head of Ukraine’s contingent in the operation, Rear Admiral Andrey Tarasov disobeyed orders from Kiev.

The Hetman Sahaidachny returns to Sevastopol, Crimea after taking part in a joint counter-piracy operation with NATO and the EU off the Horn of Africa, reported UNN on Friday, citing Ukraine’s Defense Ministry. On February 26, after crossing the Suez Canal, the ship entered the Mediterranean Sea and was expected to be in Sevastopol in early March.

Not a bad vessel. One of the later Krivak III vessels. Commissioned in 1993.

As I said the armed forces of Ukraine should be considered divided at this point. I wonder how much of the indigenous military industrial production has also been divided, I know for example Antinov's headquarters are in Kiev, and that was state run.

A very volatile cocktail has been poured. The gamesmanship begins. Will Russia withhold vital ngas? Will the IMF loan Ukraine the needed $15 billion to avoid default when the country is falling into civil war? Will vigilantes, radical elements and thugs take advantage of the chaos, lack of security to pillage the country? What exactly can the West do at this point other than verbal reprimands? As we have learned repeatedly recently the initial uprising is the easy part, then comes the trouble. If things do spiral out of control it will give Putin the justification to bring in more troops in the name of stability. Don't forget Kiev was the historic birthplace of Russia. Ukraine is a key bread basket of the region and extremely important geographically to the security of Russia.

Not only that, but how many of the Ukraine nationals with Russian background will join in the fight to protect the current Ukraine government, IF further conflicts or war breaks out?

Ukraine is more like Vietnam (colonized/annexed as province of Mighty Empire for 1,200 years, former colony, client/vassal states) than is dinky Taiwan.

What Russia is doing to Ukraine is what China did to Vietnam in 1979, to "teach her a lesson" for cozying up to enemies (Ukraine:EU, as Vietnam:USSR) to encircle/contain her.

Please don't insult Taiwan by insinuating she is a vassal state like Ukraine/Vietnam... Taiwan ROC must be respected as a former holder of Mandate of Heaven, not be treated like a savage vassal state!
