09V/09VI (095/096) Nuclear Submarine Thread

In more seriousness, based on some rumoured characteristics of 09V that would be externally visible, such as:
- 12m beam, Seawolf proportions
- x tails
- bow retractable planes
- pumpjet

... Essentially the thing will look somewhat similar to a Seawolf with x tails.

The UK oriented Navy Lookout website did very speculative art of SSN(X) and SSN(R) both of which are expected to be similarly large diameter submarines with x tails, compared to the likes of existing US and UK SSN classes:

Adapting the art a little (by combining the SSNX sail with the SSNR hull), a notional 09V could look like another "generic large diameter SSN with X tails and pumpjet and bow planes" submarine, as so:

Could you say that 095 would be roughly as big as Seawolf ?

I am hopeful it would be better than Seawolf :)

What I say is irrelevant, I am only conveying what has been expressed through some rumours that I consider credible, which is that its hull is likely to be single hull (or hybrid single/double hull) and will be 12m in beam with Seawolf proportions.

I never said anything about its capabilities, and as observers we shouldn't be having "hopes" but rather only predictions/hypotheses based on what little information we have and applying common sense to it.

what is a hybrid single/double hull?

what is a hybrid single/double hull?

Essentially what it sounds like, applied to some submarine designs like Soryu or Yasen classes, where there are parts of the ship which are single hull (usually the central part of its length) while parts are double hull (usually the more bow and stern areas).

Modified it slightly to cut down the sail height.

Personally I'd be surprised if their major SSN class went for an entirely Russian SSN sail geometry (then again Borei's sail doesn't have the geometry of Akula/Yasen etc) but I could see it being lower in height.

If anyone else wants to modify this diagram to make it look more professional and original feel free to, I'm doing a really average job modifying the excellent original art from Navy Lookout, just to get a bit of a general profile view of what 09V may look like.

For the sake of completion, I've now drawn a clean sheet configuration out for myself, with various details added and included in a way that it is a separate drawing.

Some details are included (torpedo tube geometry, towed array guide/structure at the aft near the x tails, amidships hump for a moderate number of VLS), some not included (sonar array positions, etc)

I always thought China would stick with sail mounted diving planes for their next generation of submarines.

I think all of China's submarines in the past have used fairwater planes.
They are less complicated and expensive and are still effective.
They don't increase the width of the boat excessively like the Astute's bow design.
They don't need retractable, which brings with it complexity like American bow designs.
They make swin calls more fun for crew, as a diving platform.
I take the Colombia-class SSBN going back to fairwater planes as a sign of where it is going.

Personally, I think they look better than bow-mounted planes too.
Sail-mounted planes give China's submarines more character
