If this is the inner hull of a double hull design, it would suggest a displacement to rival or even surpass the giant Typhoon!

I think not, even if this 16.5m is an inner hull of a double hull design.
Because Typhoon itself still have larger Beam (23m) with 175m length

Here is the official news of China shipbuilding industry corporation that clearly said the permanent magnet motor was tested on a conventional submarine reported by China mil an official Chinese military web
I feel vindicated clearly some people here can scrutinize and criticize what Ma said or not said and yet they completely missed the big picture of GT report . I am pretty sure it is not just any ship but submarine. After all this is China mil. The news is now all over the net with Kyle Mizokami falsely reporting it as MHD engine. Brian Wang from the next big future also has a piece

BEIJING, Oct.25 (ChinaMil) -- China successfully tested its first permanent magnet propulsion motor for vessels recently, according to the State-owned China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), which is known for manufacturing China's first aircraft carrier and the Jiaolong submersible vessel.

The CSIC released the news on its official WeChat public account that the No. 712 Research Institute of the CSIC successfully completed the test on its first permanent magnet propulsion motor for vessels on Oct 18 and all the performance indicators met the technical requirements.

It is said that the permanent magnet motor will greatly improve the mute performance of China's submarine, especially nuclear submarine, which means that, with the newly developed permanent magnet motor, the Chinese nuclear submarine is expected to become one of the world's quietest ones .

The news said the test of China's first permanent magnet motor with complete intellectual property rights achieved a successful result in Sanya City, south China's Hainan Province, at 11 am on October 18, laying a solid foundation for future tests.

The CSIC didn’t disclose the type of the submarine using the permanent magnet motor or the performance of the permanent magnet propulsion motor in the news.

However, a Chinese military expert said that the first permanent magnet propulsion motor was supposed to be installed on China’s homegrown conventional submarines, even though China has nuclear submarines and Russia-made Type 636 submarines at the naval base in Sanya
.

The expert said that the motor used in conventional submarines has the power of several megawatts, but he still cannot determine the exact power of the installed test model.

Permanent magnet propulsion motor technology can replace the reduction gears and significantly reduce the running sound to the lowest possible level, the expert said.

On the global scale, the permanent magnet motor will have the power to meet the needs of full electrical movement for nuclear submarines.

China’s development of permanent magnet motor started in the 1990s. The news released by the CSIC means that China has made a great breakthrough in that field, the expert added.

Propulsion system boosts submarine capability
China has conducted a trial run on the country's first permanent magnet propulsion motor for naval vessels, with experts saying that it marks a significant breakthrough in the country's naval vessel building industry, especially for the nuclear submarines.

The State-owned China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), which is known for its aircraft carriers and the Jiaolong submersible vessel, made a statement on its official WeChat public account on Monday that the permanent magnet motor with a Chinese patent has been used on naval vessels docked at Sanya, South China's Hainan Province, the base of China's conventional and nuclear submarine fleet.

The statement said the vessel's propeller began to turn at 11 am on October 18, then reached the designated speed, which signified the success of the permanent magnet propulsion.

Although the statement did not disclose the type of vessels the motor was tested on, Chinese military experts say they believe the motor is specially designed for China's submarines and can substantially improve their performance in many aspects, especially by significantly reducing their running sound to the lowest possible level.

The new high-performance permanent magnet motors made from rare-earth materials avoid the flaws of traditional motors that work under the excitation principle, and can provide much greater power density, and can significantly reduce its working noise," Song Zhongping, a military analyst who previously served with the PLA Rocket Force, told the Global Times on Tuesday.

Back in May, Rear Admiral Ma Weiming, China's top naval engineer, in an interview with China Central Television, said that the navy was supplying its newest nuclear attack submarines with a "shaftless," rim-driven pump-jet, which was considered a revolutionary, low-noise propulsion system.

Ma said that the technology was ahead of the US and more efficient and suitable for high-speed nuclear submarines.

A permanent magnet motor is not the same thing as a rim driven propeller. Your claim involved the latter, not the former.
