075 LHD thread

If Russia had Mistral blueprints, they would be building their own rather than getting shafted by France.

The Mistrals are good ships, but hardly anything ground-breaking.

They use common civilian shipbuilding standards and practices to cut down on costs, but I do wonder if that will come back to haunt them one day.

The RN tried the same once, but that proved to be a costly mistake as the ships built like that could not take battle damage, and several top of the line ships were lost to comparatively minor damage inflicted by attackers when fires raged out of control, and in one infamous instance, melted the entire superstructure of the ship.

The collapse of the Mistral deal may prove to be blessing in disguise if it means Russia will end up getting LHPs built to full military standards.

Maybe China will build 2 LHD's to test out the design in the next few years as it has done with other ship classes in the past. The PLAN will then have two groups of 1x CV, 1x LHD, and 2x LPDs to practice expeditionary amphibious joint operations.

None of RN warships that used aluminium in their superstructures were lost due to use of that metal (I assume that's what poster is about - aluminium steel reinforced superstructures of RN and USN warships). Not to mention that usage of aluminium there had anything to do with civilian standards! Apples and oranges here.

Pictures in the article are there for illustration only... (to me it was obvious since both the poster and model were shown during exhibitions in 2014 and 2013... but a different company...) maybe I should have been more clear

I have to say this article brings something new: The order of new engines for a new type of amphibious vessel, information which was posted on a government website.
The four 16PC2-6B Diesel Engines on order for the LHD are upgraded engines based on 16PC2-6A powering the Type 071 LPDs.
They are in turn an upgraded variant of the Type 903 AOR's 16PC2-6 diesels.

Correct. I did a paper on this long time ago and the media misreported. Same with USS Stark. While she had tons of alluminium it did not play much if any significant role to her damage.

Below is report from Proceeding Magazine.

On May 4 th 1982,HMS Sheffield(D80) was hit amidships by an Argentinean air launched Exocet missile. The missile hit fuel tanks and serious fires that resulted necessitated the ship to be abandoned 4 hours later. Twenty crew members were lost.Immediately after the incident some in the media mistakenly reported that the superstructure of Sheffield was aluminum and that this contributed to the loss. This was incorrect. Aluminum is utilized extensively in the Type 21 class frigate but,Sheffield was a Type 42 class destroyer. The Type 42 class design did not incorporate any substantial amount of aluminum into the design.

yeah, I think it was the title/headline of that article that is a bit missleading giving the impression of something new comes out about the new PLAN LHD.

Agreed. The engine part is new as I have admitted in my previous reply.

Another thought is that the engine may be shared by both the export version and PLAN version of LHDs

Hmmm hope that's not the final design !

Adding a LHA would be great for PLAN

You are talking about 1 x Type 075 plus 2 x Type 071 LPD plus a few Type 072 LST for a MEU

That's air, land and logistics components respectively

Only thing the Chinese would lack is the fixed wing operations from LHA

So ideally a carrier cover would be needed for a landing
