So what is 01 to 15 reserved for?

No idea. I thought about that before, and was wondering what's so special about 16 instead.

More likely nobody knows yet so they just reserved a 15-ship block for future use. Extremely doubtful these pennants will be used for combat/foot-soldier ships. Ceremonial more likely.

What is highly unusual is that the official news report (CCTV) never mentioned a word about what types of the ships that were commissioned. All they mentioned are the pennant numbers and the names of the ships: Long March 18, PLANS 31 Hainan, PLANS 105 Dalian. It's pretty clear from the video what types of ships they are though. Type 055 and even Type 075 are nothing new and have all had their highly public launch ceremonies; there had never been any public launch or commission ceremony for Type 094 though.

Why is that unusual? Actually I don't remember any PLAN ship type was officially mentioned. Maybe, type is nothing as worth mentioning as others. To go for an extra step, all type names that we know so far are not reflected in any official channel or source, so the real class/type name may be different too.

P.S. it is Type 09VI or 09-4.

LHD name after provinces, like aircraft carriers.

That puts LHD in the same category as carriers as the class I ships. It is a surprise to me even though I fully aware of the rationale behind it.

LHD are capital ships after all. Although they are not carriers, they are still huge ships which makes them a class of their own.

I am also a bit surprised by their naming convention but maybe PLAN is placing them in the carrier league due to their tonnage and to have less provinces feeling left out
