re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

I know we're arguing semantics but to me an LHA or even an LHD should have a well deck. LHA 6 is my opinion is an 'anomaly' but I think later ships of that class will incorporate welldecks!
It would be crazy for an LHA or LHA to not have well decks! otherwise..they would be call small carries or helo carriers!

The likes of dokdo, hyuga, mistral, ocean, wasp and its successor class the america can be called small carriers or helicopter carriers.
You're right, this is a matter of semantics and I believe LHD ships must have a well deck (which is what I meant before; i referred to dokdo being an LHD), but LHAs do not given the upcoming LHA 6.

But LHAs/LHDs can also be called amphibious assault ships, small carriers, helicopter carriers, LPH... so that thing about not hearing anything about LHA/LHD but hearing rumours of hyuga/dokdo like ships planned is a contradiction in itself. :-/

Nope..that's what the LPD-17 class is for. The LHA-6 class is actually an aircraft carrier for the USMC. A pocket CV...

If that the case it should be call a CVL or something like that. According to official USN/NATO designation for ships that should be the correct definition of a small carrier.
I know splitting hair and all that. ;)

That's because of politics. The USN would never allow the Marines to have carriers, even pocket ones. They even blocked the Wasps from getting ski-jumps even though they could have had them, and the Marines desperately wanted them to allow them to use their harriers to full potential.

Well, to put it strictly the USMC is under the Navy, though anyone dare to say that out when there's Marines around will get beaten up pretty badly I reckon...

Generally they don't. It's just a bravado they use to keep their standards high and improve comradely among the corps when they are hard at work or training.

Exactly.. The America class is a compromise . The USMC has long wanted it's own Cv that they could control. Not going to happen. The America class is what they will get.

Read this opinion..

USS America. Is it really an LHA?
World Wide Aircraft Carriers has charts here and here that document the relative tonnage of LHA's, LHD's and Aircraft carriers.

After looking at the chart a simple question must be asked. Is the USS America really an LHD? Its gross tonnage puts it firmly into aircraft carrier class, its capacity (aircraft) is equal to many carriers and its capability is also equal to most of the worlds full deck carriers.

The America Class LHA is no longer an amphibious assault ship and should be reclassed as an assault carrier or attack carrier. Navy and Marine Corps planners might have boxed themselves in on this one. This ship is too large and perhaps specialized for modern day amphibious operations and too small to be a pure replacement for the big deck carriers.

It is however big enough to justify killing a few big deck aircraft carriers and big enough to justify limiting amphibious shipping to 33 instead of the desired 38 ships the Marine Corps needs. Not only is it not the right ship for the Navy but its not the right ship for the Marines.

So Marines and Navy are playing at politics at the expense of the US taxpayer.
