re: PLAN Type 071 LPD & its Landing Craft

The US laid the first keel for the San Antonio class in December 2000. Since that time the US has commissioned 5 LPD-17 class ships. Four are under construction at this time.
As of right noww, eight total have been launched. Five commissioned, three in trials...two of which will be commissioned soon. Another will be launched this year, making a total of nine launched since 2000.

These are commissioned:

LPD-17 San Antonio
LPD-18 New Orleans
LPD-19 Mesa Verde
LPD-20 Green Bay
LPD-21 New York

These are either launched or about to be launched:

LPD-22 San Diego
LPD-23 Anchorage
LPD-24 Arlington
LPD-25 Somerset

The keel of San Diego was laid in May 2007 and launched in May 2010 for commissioning this year. Arlington's keel was laid in May 2008 and launched in November 2010, also may commission this year. The Keel of Anchorage was laid in September 2007 and launched in February 2011. Sommerset is due to launch late this year.

Here's a pic of LPD 24, USS Arlington, from several months ago. She is number eight.

That will leave Murtha and one more, as yet unnamed.

So from keel laying to launch takes 2.5 to 3 years, then a year or a year and a half till commissioning? How does that compare with the production of a 071?

Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 slowed the construction of the ships because of heavy damage to the Northrup-Grumman shipyard in Pascagoula MS.

Hi Popeye. Why haven't you banned yourself for talking about NOT 071 LPD. It is because San Antonio is American ship ? ... please don't be biased

If it was somebody else or me ... you would have banned me straightaway

Can you not call it the third mountain? There is really no need to directly translate every name that the Chinese bbs use for these ships. It's a 071. btw, a couple of other photos of this ship.

LOL, at least calling it 'third mountain' is better than people calling the ex-Varyag 'Shi Lang'.

I was originally thinking that the 071s are a little small for their function but I have come around to think that this may be OK for two reasons: 1) it is sufficient for China's MOOTW needs which are less demanding requirements than say those for US amphibious ships, 2) China is probably less confident of individual ship's survivability in wartime therefore it makes sense to spread out its forces among more smaller ships than to be concentrated on fewer larger ships.

At 19k tons, the 071 is hardly 'small' by any measure. It is the third largest LPD class operating anywhere in the world. Refer to Jeff's earlier post.

Actually, in addition to the US San Antonio Class LPD, the UKs Albion Class LPD is also larger than the Yuzhao.

The San Anotnio is 25,000, the Albion is 21,000 and the Yuzhao is 19,0000.

Here are some pics of the lbion class:

Albion -------- 21,000 UK
Yuzhao ------- 19,000 CH
Austin -------- 17,000 US
Rotterdam ---- 16,800 Dutch
Jilashwa ------ 16,500 India
Gilacia -------- 14,000 Italy
Osumi -------- 14,000 Japan
Fourde -------- 12,000 France
Endurance ------ 8,500 Singapore
Makassar ------- 8,400 Indonesia
San Giorgio ----- 8,200 Italy
