071 (20k tons) compares very favourably to the austin class (15k tons) and while it doesn't quite match san antonio's size (25k tons), it's quite modern and we can expect it to be a true 21st century warship. I'm not sure 071 incorporates as many of the SA's survivability assets and command and control features but we can't really tell from the outside of the ship.
From wiki, sinodefence and jeff head's excellent size, 071 can carry similar numbers of troops, AFVs and helicopters (possibly even more LCACs than SA).
So the yuzhao class is definitely right up there, and pretty impressive effort considering this is the first LPD china's attempted to build.
How about the quality ? .. compare to the American ones ?
