reasonable, but PLAN should at least try to acquire more 071 LPD. one simply aint enough. prolly need 3 or 4

rumour on the Chinese forum is that 998 will be in the next fleet sent to Somalia. That's kind of surprising because there really is no need to send such a large ship there, but maybe they just want to test it out on a long deployment.

As well as providing training and testing, it could be that the PLAN wants something with a good helo carrying capacity to support their operations.
Something with more range and endurance then the Z9 or simply more Z9s would be a massive boost in the capabilities and effectiveness of a PLAN task force in their anti-piracy role. How many helos can the type 071 accommodate?
Also, I think it would be safe to assume that the PLAN will not be packing the 998 with a marine strike force and their landing gear, so it would be interesting to see how the PLAN make use of all the spare space. Would the just use it to carry more provisions, or could they deploy small FACs from the well deck as additional escorts/patrols?

I think the main reason would be to be able to support more helos as they are effective in pirate interdiction or dropping special forces onto a ship in distress.
Deploying FACs is an interesting idea because it would seem to be a better matchup against the pirate boats. Could be even cheaper to use in running convoys. But what FAC can fit in the 998? I doubt the 2202s fit.

I wasn't thinking about 022s are they are too big and unsuited for the role.

Well why not? With the bigger ACLC you would get more range/endurance and u could even park an amphib IFV on it to house the marines during patrols and also provide firepower if needed. But it would be a very ineligent solution, and there is no desperate need for such measures as the PLAN could always send more ships if they feel the need for more assets. The little ACLCs could serve the same role as the fast inflateables carried by PLAN ships but maybe have better range and endurance. But i think we are getting a little off base here as i believe the main reason for sending the LPD is for training/testing and its larger hanger.

A type 068 may be an appropriate size but I really don't see how ACLC would work on piracy patrols? Assuming range and endurance is not a factor, a type 068 seems to lack space where some of the crew can position themselves with their firearms if they were to approach a suspected pirate boat. And I would assume ACLCs are loud to begin with, would probably interfere with boarding communication/interrogation.
I think what could be used would be smaller patrol boats such as the Type 218 patrol boat used by the Coast Guard. Ultimately, how would the 071 be deployed, running a convoy? Or stationed in an area and other PLAN vessels run convoy?
