It is NOT a catamaran. It is part of a conventional HUGE hull.
If it is a PLAN's ship, it is either part of the new LHD or even an aircraft carrier's stern.
I think that the upper level is about or even below at the waterline.

You seem to be correct. That doesn't lokk at all like a catamaran hull. Those two protrusions seem to be propeller shaft tunnels. But IMO a carrier should have four shafts.
So, I think that it's a civilian ship.

Charles de Gaulle AND Queen Elizabeth have only 2 propellers.

EDIT: not to mention Wasp class...
By the way, how often do we see merchant ships with two (!!!) propeller shafts ? almost never.

whatever it is, its freaking huge! and if its a PLAN ship, we will be seeing it a lot more here in the next few months. This is the HuDong-Zhonghua shipyard which produce many large cargo/oil transport vessels. We already know the Chinese Carrier has been assigned to Jiangnan shipyard in shanghai(what the state media stated at one point), so this can not be the carrier... could be the LHD, we shall see.

Is Hudong also in Shanghai?

Hard to say. That could be the aft end of a large vessel where the two protruding sections are for props extending out to screws to drive the vessel. If that is so, then this is a very low section of such a vessel.

OTOH, it is hard to say that, that is precisely what it is. Others see a catamaran. I would be surprised to see such a section for a large vessel, particularly a military vessel of any size, standing alone like that...unless it were in the very near proximity of a dry dock where it could be easily lifted into place for construction. Otherwise, it makes no sense to store it there.

Ah, oh well...as with all things. Time will tell.

Jeff, at your site there is a photo from the construction of USS Gerald Ford CVN-78, which I believe is very relevant to this perticular section of the ship in question. It is the 12th photo from the top.

«...unless it were in the very near proximity of a dry dock where it could be easily lifted into place for construction.[...]»

It IS almost within the dry dock or just next to it.

I'm guessing it's not a carrier because even if it's a twin screw carrier, wouldn't the prop be at the end of an extended "boom", not right at the end of the hull? Nor a new and larger destroyer. (Sorry, not a ship builder so I don't have the right terms)

LHD is possible but maybe just a specialized civilian ship? Like an oil exploration ship? Someone did say the shipyard produces a lot of cargo/oil transports.

Regardless, it is fun speculating with everyone else here.
