Thanks for the link!

I believe the Type 056 is 1400 tons. But here is a higher res pic:

I believe once they get going, the two shipyards (HP and HD) will be able top pump out two each a year, or four a year just from those two yards. But there is talk of maybe more yards being involved, so they may produce as many as 8 per year if they decide they seriously want to. In three years they would have 24 of them, 32 in four.

I think you're right ~1,400 ton. Do you think the number would go to 32 ?

I disagree about the displacement, the 95.5m Pattani class has a 1440t full displacement, measuring 056 now it's about 10m shorter and doesn't have a hangar, IMO its full displacement is less than 1200t.

You can't short change helo deck, safety reasons mostly.

Of course, but that's what I meant, they intend to have the 056s capable of supporting (landing and taking off wise) whatever helos they use on the 054.

Germany's Braunschweig class of corvettes are a little under 90m but they displace about 1840 tonnes. So why is it inconceivable the 056 can't weigh more? Or are people going by the known list of equipment seen on the vessel to derive their estimates? Anyone think the crew size will be 65 or less like the Braunschweig's?

Well there is a thought on SDF that 056 numbers will go +60 & it is expected that some other yards will also take part in production of 056 other than HD & HP.

If HD & HP continue to build 056s, is the expectation that production of 054s will slow down or cease? Otherwise, perhaps once the first batch is done and passes muster, production will switch over to the lesser shipyards? Didn't the 022s go through this production path?

I beleive it probably will, and maybe higher. It will be interesting to see which other yards begin working on the vessels. They will be the PLAN littoral Combat Ships, and I would not be surprised to see stronger ASW capability added to them as time goes on.

I would say C-803 is overkill for Littoral Combat Ships. And do you see any sensor that can let 056 detect enemy ships on their own? Or do they have to receive targets from other ships/aircraft's datalink like type 022s.

This.

These missiles of course could be used on enemy ships within the radar horizon, but having the YJ-83/C-803 missile (instead of something like C-702 or TL-10A) allows them the flexibility to be used as part of a coordinated saturation attack along with 022's, shore-based launchers, and other missile platforms if the USN manages to penetrate to within a few hundred km of China's coast.

The Braunschweig class is a wider ship. I made my estimate based on the Pattani class, which I believe is where 056's baseline design comes from. The Pattani is 95.5mx11.6m with 1440t full displacement. Braunschweig is 89.12m x 13.28m at 1840t. Regarding the complement I think it's higher than 65 and probably close to the Pattani's 84, the latter has aviation crew, but 056 has more weapons to man so overall crew should be similar. The number is only slightly higher than Hongjian's 75, so if the 037IIs are replaced at a 1:2 ratio then it'll be a significant improvement of efficiency.

If the estimate from Jeff Head's diagram is correct, 056 is 13m wide so it's just a slight difference with the Braunschweig class. But yes, if your hunch is correct where the 056 derives from Pattani and the width is kept intact, it is a significant difference with 11.6m. I'm hoping they can actually bring the crew size down to 65 or less with the advent of automation. That would help with endurance as you can dedicate less space to crew and more to provisions as well as free up some manpower for the other new ships coming online.

It would be nice to have a 65 men crew, but unfortunately I don't think Chinese naval engineering has reached the level of Western counterparts in the automation field to make it happen. The good news is that labor cost is low in China so sailors are cheap to come by, and the additional crew can only be helpful in terms of damage control.
