A reader (Officer onboard submarine in European Navy) tells me I am probably wrong saying the sonar is H/SJG-206. He says H/SJG-206 is a towed array rumored to be based on SQR-19. According to him, 056A VDS could be called ESS-1 based on DUBV 43.

Thoughts ?

i'm not sure PLAN has been very forthcoming with the official designation of the sonar equipment they use.

Your friend/reader is on the right track. It is definitely a VDS and not a TACTAS/SURTASS system. My own belief if the 206 is more of a TACTAS than a VDS.
Also PLAN's own 051G uses the DE-1163 which itself is based on the AN/SQR56 and relatively similar to the DUBV 43.
My conclusion is whatever that is on the 056A is an indegenous improvement to the DE-1163 and most definitely a low frequency sonar in the 5-10 KHz range. It would be ideal for a smaller vessel like the 056 in ASW. In worst case 056s will also be used as 'torpedo fodders' to protect major capital ships like carriers, cruisers etc

I guess I'll come back to this post a few years from now and see how right or off the mark I am. :)

As was expected the 18th 056 Corvette has now been commissioned!

FFG 595 “Chaozhou” commissioned 28.11.2014

That's now 18 Corvettes in 2 years........quite an impressive build rate.

Looking at the building schedule of the 056'S one can deduce that we wont see anymore new 056's joining the Chinese fleet until around Spring time next year.

No we won't........ coz 594 Zhuzhou has already been commissioned...........very recently in fact! ;)

No, Jane's article was wrong because.... 594 Zhuzhou was commissioned today (November 28) like 595 “Chaozhou”

Thanks for the clarification on boat '594'.....................I wasn't 100% convinced that 'Zhuzhou' had been commissioned, as the photos of the alledged event didn't show the vessel draped in ceremonial flags. However, other sources seemed to jump to the conclusion that the vessel had been inducted into the Chinese fleet........as was reported by another member here, at the time!

Mind you.........the fact still stands........that there are 18 056 vessels in the Chinese fleet now, which includes the recent boats 593, 594 & 595 ( we now have photographic evidence for these 3 most recent commissionings)..

Chinese Navy (PLAN) commissions Type 056 and Type 056A Corvettes on the same day
Just a few days following the commissioning of its first Type 056A ASW corvette (read our story here) the Chinese Navy (PLAN) commissioned two more corvettes simultaneously: On the same day (November 28th), the PLAN inducted Type 056 Corvette (Jiangdao class) Chaozhou (hull number 595) and Type 056A ASW Corvette Zhuzhou (hull number 594).
