Reading that article from 'Janes' which was written elsewhere.......suggests there is some confusion over the current 056 numbers active in the fleet. They say with the induction of boat '594' that made 18 commissions, yet a few days latter boat '593' was commissioned, so by that reckoning that would mean 19 056's in the fleet.......and with boat no '595' to be commissioned very soon, probably by the end of the year that would be 20 wouldn't it.

BUT.........by the known records and construction details, there are as of now 17 active 056's in the fleet that we know of, and that will probably be 18 soon.

In the new year of 2015, it may be until early Spring before we see any further boats commissioned, one can deduce this fact by looking at the launching dates, and then adding a year to that to get a rough idea of the vessels completion.
So, it looks like we may have to wait a few months into 2015, before the next batch of 056's get commissioned.

I only wrote this post, because normally when i read a 'Janes' article, they are usually behind the internet military bloggers in terms of upto date info on Chinese Navy matters, such as ship commissions.

I even read a UK 'Warship' publication recently, on the subject of Chinese carrier ambitions' (hoping to gain some titbits of new info), only for the writer of the article saying he got his info from the internet bloggers!

Simple question:

Jane's says Zhuzhou (594) is first ASW Type 056
Official Chinese MOD press release say Sanmenxia (593) is first Type 056A

-> What are the difference between classic Type 056 / ASW Type 056 / Type 056A ???

Because wikipedia says Type 056A = ASW version.

I am lost

Let me elaborate on the question further:

Is there any 056 out there still in their original configuration without even the technologically minor modifications? No funnel covering, no raised "railing" around the roof of the bridge, no grates for the openings around the stern, etc.

If there are then perhaps the boats missing these modifications would be the "056".

But because these modifications are minor perhaps all boats with or without them, but without the TAS or VDS, are considered "056"...

In other words, names are just names, among all 056s do some have VDS, some have TAS but no VDS, and some have neither?

Do the other modifications to the 056 correspond to these 3 categories or are they mixed among the 3?

I would bet on Chinese MOD over Janes. Also, it's quite possible that No. 593 was officially in service before No. 594 considering how closely we reported them to join service.

Iwonder?

I think there is a reasonable possibility that all the old 056's could get retrofitted to carry the Asw gear that the newer A's are built with.
My reasoning is that the older 056's were built with a high stern so the possibility of retro fitting with Asw gear could always have been in the plan.

I wonder

I think someone else on this thread said they thought the 056 is mainly a sensor platform.
With the VDS and towed array I think the main intent of the platform is submarine detection.

I'm not sure why they have slowed production though. Maybe the Ukraine situation is making it more difficult to get the VDS etc or maybe they are retooling and the PLAN is soon going to come out with another larger mass produced platform.

+1, Jane's got it wrong on this one;

My (reliable) Chinese source helped me out:

"Sanmenxia" is the first Type 056A Corvette (Jiangdao class) contrary to some western media reports claiming another corvette of this type had already been commissioned (Zhuzhou, hull number 594 is actually not commissioned yet!).
[...]
Of the 23 Type 056 launched in the water to date, 16 hulls are "regular" Type 056 corvettes (hull numbers in the order of their construction: 582, 596, 584, 580, 583, 597, 585, 581, 586, 587, 590, 589, 588, 592, 591, 595) and 7 are the ASW variant Type 056A (hull numbers in the order of their construction: 593, 594, 501, 502, 503, 504 plus a seventh hull that has no number yet but which was launched on 11/10/2014).

Ah!

A reader (Officer onboard submarine in European Navy) tells me I am probably wrong saying the sonar is H/SJG-206. He says H/SJG-206 is a towed array rumored to be based on SQR-19. According to him, 056A VDS could be called ESS-1 based on DUBV 43.

Thoughts ?
