Man, those 056 look tiny next to the 054A
That pciture is perhaps the best pic I have seen that really punctuates the differences in size, sensor suite, etc. between the two.

Both classes are very modern and very capabe within their own rights, but yes, the Type 056 is much smaller.

Type 056 Size:

Displacement: 1,440 tons full
Length: 290 ft.
Beam: 38 ft.
DDraft: 14 ft.

Type 054A Size:

Displacement: 4,053 tons full
Length: 440 ft.
Beam: 52 ft.
Draft: 20 ft.

While the 056 no doubt smaller than the 054A, it's still much larger than the 037 series it's designed to replace.

It absolutely is...and most importantly, as I pointed out, a modern and very capable design. Far more suited to today's conditions and threats than the 037s it will be replacing.

Considering an 037 actually has a slightly larger crew than 056, I can very well see all 037s replaced by 056s in the coming years with little need to expand manpower

definitely. As ships become more automated some mundane tasks will be done automatically reducing number of crews. The 056 is much more capable than the 037 but more automated. Same with the Ford carrier and the Zumwalt. More capable but with less human hands. PLAN's current and future ships will be no different I imagined.

Actually 056 may need higher caliber (or more educated) crew, so not all 037 crew could operate 056 and I'd imagine it would need some new "blood" anyway

No, that looks alright. One might add that WC3 592 arrived Shanghai early December for sea trials.

And you can be pretty sure that HD6 is under construction at Zhonghua.
