"During the Cold War, Nikita Krushchev famously bragged that nuclear missiles were rolling off Soviet assembly lines "like sausages." China may be restrained in producing nuclear missiles, but it sure is making Type 056 corvettes like sausages, with at least 20 under construction since 2012."

Interesting that they declined to include the 054As.

But then again, given the numbers which are already active, maybe they are considered the "present" rather than the "future".

Actually they don't only leave out the 054A but also quite a number of powerful combatants like the 052C.

People get paid to write this crap? there are so many technical and operational errors in that article.
List also failed because it didn't include the 054A which is no doubt the workhorse of the PLAN.

Despite the presence of some interesting content Foreign Policy magazine definitely has an alarmist and 'the West'-ethnocentric slant to it. This is clearly a China-is-scary fluff piece, the Chinese Navy is second only to the US Navy? Come on, that's laughable to anyone with some knowledge of world naval power.

Well in terms of both displacement and modern surface combatants, china could definitely be said to be second only to USN. Of course, the next largest navy, the JMSDF at the moment is only little smaller than the PLAN in terms of modern ships and subs, but by 2015 and beyond the PLAN will be convincingly bigger than the JMSDF

They got a lot wrong, but I've read worse articles lol...

And they also got so many specs wrong. It's bewildering that anyone can take them seriously in regards to Chinese military developments.

let's get together and list all the technical errors he makes in the comment section. do that for every articles he write.

Oh, yes I'm definitely familiar with his work, and honestly, I consider his articles not bad reading, and compared to many other western PLA watchers, he's downright accurate.
But that speaks more about the quality of work other PLA "watchers" pull out of their backsides...

To be fair, the article in question isn't too bad on the specs front.

I only see a few major hiccups:
YJ-83 isn't supersonic, the 056's 30mm gun isn't a parallel to phalanx, 052D has a 130mm rather than 100mm gun, but everything else is fairly accurate. Then again the article doesn't exactly summarise a tome's worth of technical material either...

And the author's overall conclusion regarding 056, 052D, and 071 as the future of the PLAN isn't completely inaccurate either. Including the hospital and ELINT ship is rather strange given they are only produced in very limited numbers, and I would've included 054A and 052C in the list.

here is what I have. anyone got more?

missing 054A, the most important PLAN ship
Liaoning not Lioaning
single barrel 30mm gun not like multibarrel Phalanx at all
YJ-83 don't fly at Mach 2
056 doesn't have hangar
056's torpedoes enclosed in aft superstructure not on deck
052D doesn't have "eight Eagle Strike missiles"
