Lieutenant General
let's get together and list all the technical errors he makes in the comment section. do that for every articles he write.

here is what I have. anyone got more?

missing 054A, the most important PLAN ship
Liaoning not Lioaning
single barrel 30mm gun not like multibarrel Phalanx at all
YJ-83 don't fly at Mach 2
056 doesn't have hangar
056's torpedoes enclosed in aft superstructure not on deck
052D doesn't have "eight Eagle Strike missiles"

Better yet, hey Shen go send this list to FP chief editor's office and let him know.

the sheer number of mistakes, and the fact that the five listed ships were chosen rather arbitrarily (as they could just have well have included type-22, type-81, new subs, new landing ship, etc), discouraged me from wanting to let them know. i don't think they really give a damn about the piece's veracity.

looks like the author found some ships he thought looked interesting and wrote a hastily researched piece about them rather than actually having thought about their strategic implications. fp is not a site for military analysts so they probably thought this level of reporting was adequate.

This is the launch of a YJ-82 (CSS-N-8) ?

Hey navyreco, I'm assuming you wrote this article based off those pictures and my statement

Just a heads up, that YJ-83 is not supersonic and it definitely doesn't have a range of 300km -- a lot of western news outlets have spouted those specs, and I think wikipedia has gone down that ridiculous road ioo.

In reality, it's a purely subsonic missile with a surface launch range of 180km, with only active radar seeker (no IR).
YJ-83 improves upon YJ-82 by having a greater range (180km vs 120km) and a few other guidance improvements, but that's about it.

This article has an excellent summary about the various older YJ series missiles and dispels a few myths regarding the later models.

If true, this would be the most ridiculous Wikipedia article I've ever read :) Just check this (

Range: 280 – 300+ km (or more, depending on the launch platform)

Speed:

Subsonic for initial target approach phase
Mach 1.3 for intermediary target approach phase (~30 km from the target)
Mach 1.7 for final target approach phase (~20 km from the target)
Mach 2 for terminal phase (~8 km from the target)

What's even funnier (to me), there is a Czech version of that Wikipedia article, but not that wild (at first glance, it appears to be a translation of the relevant part of

Thanks for the heads up

That's what happens when you rush to publish...

I will double check with a Chinese contact who is generally well informed on these matters (what I should have done to begin with)
