HMG or better H.M.G. Heavy Machine Gun. Any machine gun with a caliber over 12 mm is considered a HMG until it hits 20mm then it becomes a cannon

So only those assigned to the HK garrison have the HMG mount on either side? I wonder why that's not being the standard.

I think all can mount them, it's just that the HK garrison open day led the crew to install the ship with all its bells and whistles.

It's like how most PLAN ships have HMG stations, but they only arm them on certain occasions, usually during patrol.

its a common navy practice to secure weapons when not needed. In modern use with reduced radar cross section becoming standard stowing unnecessary fire power makes a lot of sense particularly since most HMGs on modern ships really don't have a mission unless the ship is close to a port or land where small craft may become a threat.

Not to mention that leaving small arms out exposed to the elements, especially sea spray, for prolonged periods is not a good idea.

I wish we knew the exact cost of each 056, along with the actual build quality, any potential weaknesses and delays that the programme might have experienced in its cycle up to now, just so we can compare with other similar projects in other navies.

Commissioning 8-10 of these a year is a very impressive feat, and within a few years could completely modernize the PLANs coastal/littoral patrol capability. If the second "tranche" of 056s are modified with a helicopter hangar, or more capable sonar systems, etc, it would give PLAN an excellent large number, decent endurance multi role combatant.

The PLAN launched eight of these last year...and have now commissioned all eight of those.

So far they have launched seven this year, and may yet launch another 2-3...which they will probably commission next year.

Launching from 15-18 of these in two years is a phenominal build.

They are only corvettes, the seem to be more like extremely large missile boats for open water rather than compact frigates.
