It has been generally speculated that the total number of vessels in the Chinese Navy will fall slightly upto 2015, but thereafter numbers should increase again.

Don't forget there are a lot of old vessels particularly at the lower end of the Navy, which need replacing!

Thing is by 2020, total number of vessels may not of increased much, as from today, but the fleet will be much younger and certainly more powerful, and with fewer classes of ship, there should be a stronger compatibility of weapons and electonic suites throughout the fleet.

It is a bit boring to discuss frigate numbers, since we both know what they have. Anticipating a little and counting 16 054A, I arrive at 48 (after having deducted two of three 053H2).

I think the target is to have 24 first-line and 24 second-line frigates, and expect that figure to stay reasonably constant.

You were probably wrong to strike 550 from the active list, as it was almost certainly commissioned on 21 March and has been seen at Qingdao-Jiaonan quite some time ago.

Whether Wikipedia writes 350 or 389 J-7, they are still way off the mark. There are some 900 in 30 regiments/brigades.

I only edited 2 articles on the PLAN, the Jianghu class and the Type 054A i turned the numbers of active ships from 15 back to 14 and change 550 Weifang's status from active to being on sea trial.

Talking about Wikipedia perhabs someone here can take a look at the air force article the numbers they have on their inventory list are largely fictitious, the numbers of Chengdu J-7's jumped from 350 in 2011 to 389 today! Perhabs Deino can do that using his own book as a source. :p

The PLAN currently has 43 frigates and 23 destroyers making the total fleet size of DDG's and FFG's in the PLAN to 66. Earlier in the year it was still 68, but this year so far they have decommissioned 4 Jianghu's and only commissioned 1 Type 052C and 1 Type 054A. I don't know if this reduction in the fleet size is permanent or temporary. We will have atleast 3 new ships that's going to be commissioned later this year.

Fleet numbers bounce up and down, USN has seen a decline in numbers but the overall growth by 2020 will be over 300 ships

I think the fleet total is planned to be 313 in the coming decades up from the current 284 of which 96 are deployed

Same with China they might see a decline but you must also take into account the under construction ships and ones that are planned

I struck 550 Weifang off of the active list based on prior experience with 150 Changchun that said to have been commissioned on 28 december 2012 but then later was officially inducted on 31 january 2013 and then there is 575 Yueyang that said to have been commissioned back in april of this year but then it was officially inducted on 3 may 2013. There will always be rumors and sources claiming things on the internet but unless there is a official announcement (ie on CCTV in China) i will remain skeptical of its veracity. Correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't CCTV in China announce every commissioning into the navy no matter how short of a time they spend on it. And the usual time for a Type 054A from launching to commissioning is 12 months 550 Weifang has been launched on 9 july 2012 and if it is commissioned on 21 march 2013 it means that it only took 550 Weifang 8,5 months to be commissioned. Which i doubt, even the latest Type 054A 575 Yueyang took 12 months to be commissioned after launch. So my guess is that we will see 550 Weifang inducted somewhere in early july.

While your at it Franklin I haven't seen Dalian building any Type 052D DDGs, in wiki someone has added them in as 117 and 118, although its the correct pennants

The last two Dalian DDGs built were the 115 and 116 Type 051C DDGs launched in 2004 and 2005. 7,100 ton displacement, and yes, they are Steam Turbine propulsion.

You can likely add 119 and 120 to Dalian's order book.

Really so you think Dalian will be building few DDGs? That's great the extra production will be good, if JN can launch 2 and Dalian 1 each year thats three DDG launches a year which would be very impressive, if they can keep that running for a few years PLAN will have a good DDG fleet pretty fast
