Nice!

With Type 056, Type 054A, Type 052C/D, Type 071 and throwing in a few others that's more than 80 warships in the pipeline

ok................so how many 056's are now in service with the PLAN?.........is it 3 or 6?

Seems to be a bit of confusion on this matter amongst defence forums!

Well, who is to say they don't all have TAS? Considering the threat environment, the PLAN's current strengths and weaknesses, the ships the 056 are replacing as well as the design choices (just look at how high the aft is, they could easily have design her with a deck less under the helipad and easily been able to put a full helo hanger on her), it always made perfect sense to me that they were designed with ASuW as a primary concern, and TAS would have been a big priority.

Considering the speed that these ships had been pumped out, I seriously doubt that a major redesign had happened. That means that either the 056 had been designed from the start to have multiple versions for different missions, or that TAS had always been present. The dedicated TAS hole is far from some mandatory requirement when they have that big ass round hole pretty much in the same place.

I know they are for mooring lines, but you don't need mooring lines when you deploy your TAS, and your TAS should not be deployed when you need to use mooring lines, so I just don't see why the two cannot share the same hole.

You are right, doesn't mean one can't launch a TAS from the mooring line opening. However, I think a dedicated TAS opening has rollers on the edges to facilitate with launch and recovery of a TAS?

More importantly, it seems the 056 program either had several variations planned early on as you say or there is more modifications going on. Just compare the two. 597 clearly doesn't have that supposed TAS opening compared to 583. And for these two vessels, they have their upper smokestack painted black. Don't think some of the others do. Makes me wonder if there is any pattern depending on which shipyard built the vessel.
