A few months back I said that the best chance to observe 056 up close will be during the annual open house, but probably due to ongoing political unrest this year's Labour Day open house event have been called off - if there's open house event, distribution of tickets would've been done as late as last Sunday but not a peep even today...

It's probably for the best, because the naval base is just a block away from container terminal that are on strike, and these days even simple military exercises would be marred on the media as muscle flexing.

Damn those unionist...HK needs someone like the late "Iron Lady", when all we got are clowns and spineless...

I don't think 056 is in HK yet

Next possible date would be August 1st, if not October 1st, though both are "boiling hell climate" time in HK...I ain't doing this for the money so I really don't fancy getting my arse roasted out in the open on a 35 degrees Celsius sunny day.

Yeah, not for the 056. But what if the Liaoning or a 071 visits?

I found a better picture above to express myself.

Don't worry 'Franklin'......i'am sure there will be a shed load of 056 ships being commissioned this year..... as there are quite a few doing sea trials or having final outfitting done now!.....its not wartime you know;)

As has been already said, I think the first in class ship is having a very thorough going over first, to find out any flaws in the design!

This is really a very great photo of the Type 053 and shows what a great OPV it is.

For a full blown Littoral Combat Vessel, the only thing I would do more would be to lengthen the vessel a bit, put that landing deck down one deck lower, and make room for a hanger for the helo.

Like this for example:

Type056-LCS.jpg

But then it would be an LCS or light Frigate and that is clearly not what the PLAN has in mind for this vessel. It is an OPV with helo handling capabilities, but not designed to house one.

The news is that today 580 Datong is being commissioned into the northern fleet in Dalian.

Since 580 is named after a major city in Liaoning, we can be sure about NSF. The news fits in with a report I recently saw, namely that 580 and 581 from Liaonan Navy Yard Lushun will go to 77 Subchaser Squadron at Haiyangdao.

582 BENGBU is currently at Zhoushan, now no doubt joined by 583. I suppose it is too much to hope for that they will later go to Haiyangdao (logically the four 056’s from Lushun will stay in NSF). So the general picture will be more messy than expected.

An earlier assessment was that 580-583, 584-587, 588-591 would go to ESF, 592-595 to NSF and 596-599 to Hong Kong. That would have looked much more orderly. I guess the distribution between fleets is correct, though.

Btw, the correct name of 586 is JI’AN.
