And in any case, the cruiser classification is not terribly relevant these days. Distributed and network combat systems can relegate command to cloud servers shared by multiple combatants rather than just one. Whether the vessel appointed command in fleet AAW is called a cruiser or a large destroyer really doesn't make much of a difference.

However, in both USN and PLAN, Type 055 and Zumwalt COs are one rank above ordinary DDG COs. So it's not like there isn't a difference between large destroyers and normal DDG. But perhaps the difference is small enough that whether to call them Large DDGs or CGs really is down to semantics.

We still have that (unverified?) info that 052d are limited to 16 strike cells, while 055 is 100% full length.
I.e. difference for some applications(strike) may actually be manifold.

The same two ships as in the above post, but seen from the air.

What's that lead ship on the right? A Type 052D?

If it is 052D, then this image highlights the size difference between the two.

As excited as I was when first time hearing that. Now come to think about it is it really necessary to have all vls strike length? It' not likely a 055 would fill every single vls with a strike length missile.

Most of the time, having all strike-length cells would just translate to wasted volume that could likely be put to better use.

I think this depend

I think this depends on the re-load rate and capacity and Task/Strike Force composition. In a Strike Force composed of 1Type 055 and 3 Type 052s, the 52s could handle A-A responsibilities and the 55 could handle strike tasks.
