If you want my opinion, emphasis my opinion, not meant to be taken as authority, my guess is 9 or 12 ships in an initial batch run. 9 if you have three ships per fleet, a set of three for the North Sea, another set for East Sea, and third set for South China Seas. 12 if you have 4 ships per each of the three fleets. With the carriers, I am assuming one per fleet for now, CV16 for the North Sea, CV17 for the East Sea, and CV18 for the South China seas.

12 055 for an initial batch, but these numbers can be cut if 055A starts appearing, taking over the balance of the 055 original contracted numbers.

Type 055 can have TAS, Bow sonar and VDS and every other ASW equipment

but what a warship needs is a helicopter every submarine captains nightmare

2 x Z18C and a rotary UAV should be on every Type 055

the sheer lack of rotary wing on PLAN warships is very concerning

When you think the number of Z-9s and Ka-28s. I think almost every ship (frigate+destroyers) has a helicopter and even this is not true Z-20 here to rescue! lol.. :)

Why do you think the US navy is having such a hard time sticking meaningful armaments onto the LCS structure.

It hasn't stopped the US Navy from adding meaningful armaments to the LCS. So that kinda blows your response out of the water regarding the 055 at worst or it doesn't make much sense at best. Try again.

I wonder why the PLAN didn't or couldn't add an extra row of VLS at the rear launch area. Seems like an easy thing to do.

Wonder whether the decision was political? To prevent an arms race?

This vessel should have alot of designed in potential for growth. What do you think guys?

I think that at this point, the main reason for people commenting on the number of VLS cells in this hull is due to a mild form of OCD coupled with bragging rights incentives. Why one more row and not two? Why another row in the first place? If it seems easy, why didn't they do it? How would an extra row start an arms race? (are the professional state navies of superpowers run by fanboys)? Would one row less in the front area make the hull a complete dud? etc etc

Mind you, I'm not criticizing your post. It's just that I have been lucky to be in a position in the past where similar design and operational decisions are made, and the whole process from inception to system engineering and implementation is completely foreign to most arguments made in internet forums by us fans and military buffs.

Does anyone have a clear shot of the Type 055 stern and a good side shot of the helo deck to the water line?

I wonder why they placed the NSMs in front of the bridge at the bow at the USS Gabrielle Giffords? It is not only exposed to the water splash at the bow, but it also ruins the ship radar cross section.

No one ever thinks about designs as balancing a number of trade offs towards an optimal set of parameters for what you want to do. Even within the engineering profession not everyone makes for a good systems engineer.

Hi all;

I´ve another question about Type 055 class.

Having the Type 052C/D as adequate or better said, useful, the VHF Yagi radar for detecting stealth aircraft, why the Type 055 didn´t fit it?.
Which is, in your oppinion the radar or sensor most useful to detect stealth aircraft aboard the Type 055?.

Here in Spain, we are building the F110 frigate which has an integrated mast with S band and X band radar (very similar to this Type 055), but very lighter. But I have no idea why chinese PLAN have discarded the Yagi antenna aboard Type 055.

Thanks again.
