That CGI is clearly a really old one (relatively speaking). You can tell this by the incorrect hull crease which is depicted as being one deck higher than it actually turned out to be. Other definite errors include the mast-top rotating AESA, the COGAG (and therefore the stacks) configuration, and of course the number of VL cells. Other likely (but as of yet unconfirmed) errors include the Z-8/18-sized hangar, the exposed funnels, and the TACAN beacon. What I like that this CGI got right before any of the other CGIs I've seen is the placement of the RHIB garages, the lack of a rear VSR, and the clean foredeck.
Russia won't ever buy a 055. Just like Russia won't ever buy a 054A. Or a Yuan SSK. Pride goeth before the fall, but that's just how the world turns.
Russia can and does produce corvettes, frigates, SSKs, SSNs, and SSBNs. The only hole is large surface combatants, the destroyer and cruiser classes. Russia doesn't really need a strong surface navy since it is even more of a continental power than China is, so the lack of large warships isn't exactly a glaring deficit in Russia's defense posture. It may eventually produce a few if its economy gets back on track (e.g. Lider), but these will mostly be for show to demonstrate its great power status, like its lone and mostly useless carrier. I don't see a problem with its technical capacity, but its current lack of industrial and financial capacity is not necessarily a predictor of its future industrial and financial capacity, especially if the price of oil shoots back up.I can see a not all together implausible scenario where the Russians might be moved to procure substantial number of major surface combatants from China.
Russia’s capacity to expand her surface feet is a pale shadow of those of former Soviet Union and contemporary China. She has neither the industrial, nor the financial, nor in many case the technical capability to restore that capacity. The attempt by Russia to interfere in multiple western elections can bring about a eventual confrontation, especially if the trump administration crashes and burns, and clintonian democrats gains dominant control in Washington. If that occurs, there is no possibility Russia could hold her own in the medium term without major industrial and financial support from the outside to make up for her greatly diminished rearmament capacity.
A question that is a bit off topic but still: I've seen in this thread a lot of satellite images with "product preview" watermark on them. It looks as if they're from some service which is free to use. If so, could someone tell me where to go to register for that service. I thought initially it was Digital globe service but I can't find a simple and free registration on their pages, so perhaps it's some other service...
