The cruiser classification is obsolete and useless. For all intents and purposes, modern naval combatants are either frigates or destroyers, and the line between those two are blurring as well. The only reason the USN stuck to the "cruiser" classification is because they felt insecure about the Soviet Kirovs. The PLAN does not share that insecurity and they have chosen to call the 055 exactly what it is; a destroyer.

Let the "cruiser" classification die.

The real reason USN stuck to "cruiser" classification is all about Navy ranks.

DDG CO is a Commander, CG/CVN CO is a Captain. So if USN doesn't have cruiser anymore, they will lose several captain slots, that's bad news for the whole navy rank structure. The navy officer promotion will be out of order.

However PLAN doesn't have cruiser to begin with, so it's not a problem for them.

Once more for anyone's best guess that the pennant numbers for the Type 055 DDGs will be?

Looks like Type 052D will round out all of the 170s now, so I was wonder about 180 and up? I have seen speculation on 180, 181, 191, etc. but do not know which might be actual.

Any ideas?

Let's put it this way

JNCX will launch the 2nd Type 055 in 2018

The 5th unit is already next to where 1st was launched so I expect 6th unit to appear after 2nd is launched

DL is going to launch 3rd and 4th units

We can expect visual on 7th and 8th in 2018 at DL

That is to say 4 in the water and 4 under build

That's 8 x Type 055 coming our way very soon

yeapp, it has been speculated that the 1st batch is 8 Type 055 and then move on to 055A with few improvements, including IEP and might be 128 VLS, etc

Yes. A this rate, we will see four in the water by the end of 2018 or start of 2019, and eight in the water by 2022 or 2023...about which time the first four will be commissioned and working on IOC. Phenomenal growth.

Of course the US has 22 Tico cruisers, of which 11 will start being upgraded to a new standard and longer lasting equipment and other provisions in 2019. By 2030 all of these 11 will be upgraded. The US Navy will be decommissioning the non-upgraded cruisers such that by 2035 the 11 upgraded cruisers remain for the Carrier groups. These would then all serve on until the 2045 time frame.

Sometime between 2025 and 2030 a new replacement crusier is planned to start building such that by 2045, they will all have replaced the 11 remaining Ticonderogas, and perhaps 18 of them will be built.

I think you might've confused the Type 055 thread with the US military thread.

Is that because certain ships have fleet commander system (extra equipment/weight)? It was speculated that 055 will be the flagships of China's several fleets.
