If their goal is to pump up the scary Chinese Navy, then I'd counter that this writer is a double agent (or incompetent "scholar" from our degree-mill colleges) working very hard to understate the Chinese Navy's capability. For example, claiming that only 12 Chinese warships are equipped with SAM systems.

the author of the first four paragraphs, I'm going to call him P, was probably writing some time around 2000 CE, before 052C and 051C project became public.
The author of the second part, I'm going to call him I, writing around 2012 CE. the poor intern read about the 055 project from some unreliable source.
read their front page for more hilarity. including an article that attempts to reform the image of Yasukuni Shrine.

Well regarding the....is it real, or not scenario.....with the 055..........all i can say is that several Chinese military websites are currently running quite detailed articles on this, there claimed 4th generation Destroyer, at present!

ps:- trying to understand even the translated text is not easy.........but i got the impression from the article that the big destroyer is the next main project, then to be followed by a newer frigate class!

You wouldn't happen to have gotten that picture from sina military.com, would you? I think I saw that picture there too.
Anyway, it's obviously a fan boy CG who cannot tell a ship's bow from aft.
The nominal "055" they drew is ridiculously top heavy, its main gun is about the size of the entire superstructure of the diminutive frigate, and the cruiser apparently has such a shallow draft it can park a stone's throw away from an island!
The project and ship is almost definitely real. The drawing definitely isn't. Not even a good attempt. 1/10

Steve...it is clear what that picture is modeled on.
It is simply a fan-boy bastardization of the Zumwalt made to force fit into a Type 055 role.
I have no doubt that the PLAN is looking at, and preparing for a larger vessels and even a cruiser Type 055. I myself have doubts about the imminent building of such a vessel when the PLAN is going all out in serial production with the Type 052D (a very fine vessel) and continuing with Type 054A and Type 056 serial production (also both very fine vessels in their roles). I just do not see the need to hurry up and put out a Type 055 at this point.
Time will tell...but I can almost 100% assure you that when they do put out the Type 055, it will bear no resemblance to that particular picture.

Yes........i agree image is of someones imagination of what they hope 055 will look like............and that the project was not some sort of 'pie in the sky' dream.........if it is, then many people are going to look very foolish!

Now that is food for thought.
I think we are going to see something of a traditional hull form, with stealth characteristics, perhaps two 64 cell VLS (one fore and the other aft) perhaps a Type 730/FN-3000L CIWS mix, a helicopter hanger capable of two helos, and as to the radars, probably something along the lines of the Type 052D, and if that design is scalable, perhaps one a bit bigger.
These pics comes close ot something I would imagine (except I believe there will be two 64 cell VLS, a two helicopter hanger, and one Type 730 CIWS too):
I'd argue having double the VLS, more C4I facilities, having room to refit newer weapons like rail guns and lasers (if IEPS is present), room for an admiral to plant his flag, and better living conditions are all valid improvements an 055 would bring
