Forgive my ignorance but what they wear those biological warfare suits for?

Having asked a dumb question about F22 Raptor recently, maybe I'll ridiculize myself some more :) : There will be no CIC on the Zumwalt class destroyers (and these ships will be controlled from the bridge and ship's mission center) according to

No problem, Jura, it's a good question/observation. But practically speaking, they still have the control center, they are simply calling it by a new name. The article makes this pretty clear:

Surface Warfare Article said:
The two-deck-high ship's mission center (SMC). The SMC will have the look and feel of a command center, with operators overseeing the ship's missions and functions on multi- modal common display system (CDS) workstations. The SMC replaces the cramped combat information centers (CICs) on other U.S. surface warships and gives the commanding officer (CO) and tactical action officer (TAO) an exceptional view of the tactical and operational pictures

So, the CIC is now replaced by, or simply called the SMC, Ship's Mission Center. It can do more things than the old CIC because it is not just oriented towards combat, but it also encompasses combat. That's what the picture from the earlier post is of, and like a traditional CIC, the SMC is in direct contact with the bridge isso they can make command decisions from there if necessary. In most instances the command decisions are made directly in the CIC...or in the DDG 1000's case, it will be in the SMC.

Good observation however those are not NBC gear otherwise you'll see them cover head to toes including the face.
What you see is call anti flash gear common in most warships. They are primarily made from nomex or other flame resistant materials to provide temporary protection to the hair, skin and hands from short-duration exposure to fire or extreme heat.

I don't know how the military can keep coming up with new acronyms... Surely it must get tiring after a while lol

Risking again to be completely wrong :) : I thought the Chief Engineer on a USN ship had not sit in the CIC, but (s)he would in the SMC of the Zumwalt-class destroyers.

Hope not, once you look past the swoopiness and bling, you'd see all versions of star ship enterprise had atrocious ergonomics. The bridge of the enterprise is good as neither a bridge nor an combat information center, and seem custom made to thread all decisions through the captain and yet jam the captain behind situation awareness bottleneck.

:)

And let's not go into the damage control features... Nobody has ever heard of the fuse in the age of Star Trek, apparently.

Yes........some great new images of the CIC rooms of various warships.

It may seem a silly question, but do any warships, lets say have elsewhere some sort of backup systems for weapons control etc, just in case the CIC room takes a major hit from a missile attack.

Yes, i know the rooms are well protected, and positioned in a ship to lessen damage................but it makes you wonder that despite all this marvellous modern high tech technology, it can all so be totally rendered useless.......therefore leaving the ship a useless metal hulk.

Or, maybe......the whole idea is to get your strike in first and hopefully not be hit first by the enemy!

I do not think you are wrong at all.

The CIC is dedicated to combat operations and usually engineering/propulsion operations are taken care of in a separate area.

On the Zumwalt they will all be consolidated into the SMC. Which will include the CIC functions.

Steve, there are redundant areas of the ship set up to take over the various operations should the need arise. While the display and information flow will be more impressive and more succinct in the SMC or CIC, if that area took a hit the ships are designed with redundant communications and control areas to keep manning and fighting the ship.
