The fact that we even have these kind of comments (oh no, YJ-83? oh no, what is that derpy deck gun housing? oh no, no UVLS? oh no, why have that tonnage without looking like a ex-soviet glass cannon? etc etc) is indicative of the severe lack of knowledge or critical thought online (from gamers, children, terminally online fanboys and other groups that have no insight or relevant knowledge on the subject at hand).

I'm not talking about/trying to insult any of our posters here btw, this is a general phenomenon. Here is another angle of the ship, does it look "inefficient/cramped" there?

It is a great platform. It just looks terribly underarmed.
Nothing which cannot be solved later if they want to.

my question ? why china spend effort to upgrade their gun CIWS from 7 to 11 barrel first instead of ....deploy quad pack HHQ-16 on their ship ?
typical type 054 A/B , type 052D only have 32/64 VLS

equip and deploy quad pack mid range AA missile like HHQ-16/essm will offer way more air defense power than upgrade CIWS gun barrel number .

why pick CIWS gun upgrade first ?

Because the PLAN can delegate heavier firepower mounted on other platforms within the same formation, or that it is not expected to use them where it is sent as a response - such as territorial dispute in early phase of escalation, as further escalation(s) will be handled by DDGs.

Today's PLAN can afford FFGs that kind of luxury.
