The first 054B FFG at Huangpu Wenchong is expected to be launched soon, as the floating drydock has been aligned with the slipway. Referring to the construction process of 054A in the past, the main mast will be installed in place through the gantry crane of the indoor slipway before launching.

Question from an uninitiated, are these frigates built using blocks like the new aircraft carrier? Or a traditional building method?

Question from an uninitiated, are these frigates built using blocks like the new aircraft carrier? Or a traditional building method?

Basically all chinese naval and commercial shipbuilding is done in a modular fashion, which consists of fabrication of modules prior to assembly into the actual hulls.

There are different degrees of modular fabrication, and 003 was built with some larger modules prior to assembly for its base hull, compared to say 003 which was also done in a modular way but with slightly smaller module blocks. And for surface combatants like frigates and destroyers, they are done with module blocks which are obviously smaller because they're smaller ships, but are still modules nevertheless.

So:
Are they using blocks/modules? --- Yes
Are they "like the new aircraft carrier"? --- Maybe? It depends what you mean by this.
Are they built using a "traditional building method"? --- Probably not, assuming you mean construction from the keel up in the dock itself, as basically everyone does so by in a modular way where modules are first prefabricated.

I assume that either one of the "003" actually refers to some other PLAN warship types instead of the 003 CV-18?
