While there are other ship designs with two gas turbines, some Japanese ships are examples of that, such designs will have worse fuel efficiency than mixed gas turbine and diesel designs, or designs with mixed gas turbine and electric design. The main advantage of such schemes is higher peak power output and ship speed for anti-submarine warfare close to shore. So yeah while that is also a possibility, given the tendency of Chinese civilian ship design as of late to be more evolutionary than revolutionary, I think it is more likely we will see a combined gas and diesel propulsion scheme. But I could be wrong.

054A was a nice "good enough" combatant on the production line for almost 2 decades - never a cool guy, just a tough worker. It will still be.
It's time to replace it on slipways -
The first Type 054A was commissioned in the year 2008. China had a GDP of $4.6 Trillion
15 years later Today, China's economy has grown 4x times == $19 Trillion
China definitely has the money to afford an upgrade.

In front of the first, almost structurally complete 054B it looks like a second 054B hull is taking shape, based on beam and length.


edit: hmm doing a few more comparisons, it's actually not fully obvious if the second hull is a 054B. Some aspects suggest yes, some suggest no.

The first 054B FFG at Huangpu Wenchong is expected to be launched soon, as the floating drydock has been aligned with the slipway. Referring to the construction process of 054A in the past, the main mast will be installed in place through the gantry crane of the indoor slipway before launching.
