More likely, but not necessarily, the other issue with a pure gas turbine plant is that it is less fuel efficient than a combined plant meaning that you offset any gain in space from the engine by the need to carry more fuel for a given requirement.

Diesel engines do not make little difference to ASW operations. Most ASW operations are undertaken at relatively low speed where the vast majority of modern European origin ships are running on their diesels. They are however insulated and mounted in a manner that greatly reduces the noise they radiate into the water. Of greater concern is the noise generated by the propeller and western navies have worked tirelessly to reduce this.

There's truth in what you said. Guess it's just different approaches to overall ship design, US & Japan are on one side, European navies the other. Let's wait & see PLAN's take on this. :coffee:

looks like the 4th 054A from HD shipyard has just finished sea trials. The number for it still has not been painted. It will probably be 549. I like the last shot of its hangar with the Z-9 model. I would guess that it should join the ESF sometimes in the beginning of next year.

Nice looking SAG.

The PLAN has a good guided missile, all-purpose frigate in the 054A.

Will work well for SAG, or phibron or CV escort duties, all of which the PLAN is moving steadily towards.

I an pretty sure that is the 5th one from hp. I saw that picture this morning and then found the same one from my drive a couple of weeks ago. The guy who posted it conveniently forget that the 5th one has not gone on sea trials yet.
