So they've launched the new 054A now. Nice.

looks to me like this one has a bigger (bow)gun, though when it was in the hangar it looked normal.Hmm i wonder why that is? Maybe my eyes are playing tricks with me.

hard to say, I guess we will have to see. While 054A was still in the docks, I know a 1500 ton cutter was under construction in the other dry dock. But that one looks to be getting ready to be launched too now, so I guess we will have to wait and see.

Either way, a lot of activities at HP shipyard.

刚刚露面的054A新护第7艘548号“益阳”舰（第8艘是549号“常州”舰，与它靠在一起的是054A的第9艘，尚未知道舷号，据说是538号“烟台”舰。
算上刚刚露面的第9艘，目前已经露面的054、054A、054A+系列新型护卫舰一共已有11艘，具体如下：

估计最快到2012年底，中国海军至少拥有18艘054系列新型护卫舰。预测它们在三个舰队及各驱逐舰支队服役的情况：


北海舰队：2艘


驱1支队：538、550号


东海舰队：8艘


驱3支队：525、526、529、530号


驱6支队：546、547、548、549号


南海舰队：8艘


驱2支队：568、569、570、571号


驱9支队：572、573、574、575号


另外，从571号“运城”舰的舰名看，它应该是属于北海舰队的舰名命名范畴，现在却在南海舰队服役，因此，不排除这样的情况：待到054系列护卫舰全部建成服役后，各舰的服役部队会有调整，570、571舰可能会转归北海舰队的驱1支队，从而形成东海舰队拥有8艘（其中两艘为054型）、南海舰队拥有6艘（其中4艘为054系列的终极改进型）、北海舰队拥有4艘的装备格局。

Could you explain me the difference between 054A, 054A+ and 054A++?
Which improvements are made.

If China are serious about operating a modern blue water fleet then it seems to me the construction is going a little slow.By the time these 054's are built (assuming A.man is correct) everything from the early Jiangwei II back, will be up for decomissioning or resale at least, as they will be more than 20 years in service.That leaves around 30 frigates,a drop of around 20 on current numbers( give or take a few).So building 18 054's is unsurprising in the sense that the PLAN seems very satisfied with this design, but still it is not enough.I think they need more ,whether they be 054's or a brand new successor.I'm basing my argument on China looking to emulate or get close to ,say the UK in terms of service life for their frigates.(15 years approx + SLEP. i think).This seems a serious headache for the PLAN actually,a big ask even for their quick construction times.Am i missing something ?

You didn't mention that 054A (and its successors) will not be a one-for-one replacement of Jiangwei's. The 054A's displacement would be considered a destroyer compared to the older generation.

The 054A's are mainly for defending coastal cities against cruise missile attacks. They are large enough to go the Gulf of Aden. That's really quite enough for China's needs. It makes sense for China to continue to mass produce these.

This bit says that those ships that are equipt with YJ-62 are considered to be 054A++ type.

There is no mention of what is the difference between 054A and 054A+ though.

I understand that 18 capable modern frigates are enough for any country to be proud of (top end of the UK active fleet) but from the noises i've been hearing, China wants to take responsibilty for it's huge commercial activities around the world ,shipping lanes et al as well as it's security and trips to Aden etc.etc. so reducing the numbers seems to contradict that albeit the replacements being more capable.How many do you think would suffice for China's needs?

I would like to see 32 Type 054A series. 16 of these can be on patrol while the other 16 are replenished. Each of the Yellow Sea, East China Sea, South China Sea and Indian Ocean will have 4 Type 054A series on patrol at any time. Two of these could be designed for air defense, one designed for ASW and one for ground attack.
