So we will have 24 054A in service soon
No. The 3 shown in those photos are part of the 19 Type 054As already launched, not in addition. The other two are Type 056 corvettes.

So, there are 19 launched and will ll be in service in the next year or so. They are:

The 2013-04-28 launch should be Hudong;
The Huangpu 2013-09-28 date just a ceremony, the ship has not been launched (no one wanted to do anything before the long holidays);
The 2013-09-30 Hudong launch should be the 18th 054A.

The list is done in pennant number order, not date.

I believe the PLAN is going to count the 9-28 date as the launch...and for all practical purposes she is, so, after the holidays there will be 19 in the water, and as far as the PLAN is considered with official dates, there are 19 now, with the 9-30 date being the 19th as far as dates are concerned, and the 9-28 being 19 as far as in the water is concerned.

Yes.............from what ive read on Chinese military websites, they in there opinion consider the 054A at HP as launched.
I'am sure the ship will be in the water, as soon as the holiday in China finishes.

Just for reference.......the 'Sanmexia' is the name of the ship just launched at HD on the 30th Sept, not the ship that was launched in April, which still appears to be unnamed!

HP 9 576 finally took the plunge 8 September.

As it was launched without any ceremony, the roll-out on 28 September probably counts as the official launch date.

I did see someone on wiki put the 7th Oct as the launch date for HP 9, but that has been changed back to the 28th Sept.

I think, unless we see otherwise from Chinese sources, that 28th Sept is the official launch date, as that was when it was announced from the Chinese media, even though the shipworkers after putting the flags on the ship, ran off home for the holidays, before rolling the ship into the water.

Regarding the Frigate run........if production of the 054A comes to an end soon, i dont think the Chinese will wait too long before starting another class, as that causes problems in the long run, of having to suddenly replace a lot of older vessels. The RN is an example of this. After years and years of continual Frigate production, the last Frigate completed for the RN was in 2001.

The Type 26 wont enter service at least, lets say 2020 at the earliest, some 20 years after last Type 23.
The Type 23 is having to carry on in service longer than its original service time plan.

I dont think the Chinese, will wait for the 054A's to get too old before being replaced.......do you?

I think they still have many jianghus and jiangweis to replace, I'd expect, or at least hope, that their drive for modernisation continues. They will very soon, within two or three years, reach a point where the majority of their fleet are modern and/or blue water capable. Question is if they will let their older ships use up their service life before building replacements, say five to ten years down the line, or retire them early (or disarm and refit them for coast guard, etc) and have replacements straight after 054A concludes.

So is the consensus for 054A 20 units or 24? We see the 19th and 20th boats now, so I'm wondering what physical evidence of 21 and beyond there are.

From reading a Chinese Naval news article on the 054A............all i can say is that they say they have launched 19 of the 20 vessels.

Whether that was 20 as of known build now....or total, we wont know until evidence or not of future vessels being built at HP and HD.

.......oh yes......it was also mentioned launch date of HP9 was 28th Sept........though vessel didnt get into the water until the 8th Oct at 3.00 (am or pm?). Just in case anyone is interested! :D
