054/A FFG Thread II

JMSDF will obviously have the edge in terms of training, preparedness and experience however those things are subjective and difficult to gauge.

Training will be more or less equal. China is no longer the poor backwater that it was in the past, they can now afford to train personnel to a degree that rivals the best in the world.

Preparedness is such a vague concept, I don't even know how you can definitively say one country is more prepared to fight than another. Both the PLAN and JMSDF are navies of functioning nations; their chain of command is intact and discipline is high. Both are ready to fight at a moment's notice should they be ordered to.

I'm not sure I understand what 'experience' you're talking about. Experience in operating a carrier or experience in operating modern vessels? If you're talking about the carrier; Japan doesn't even have a carrier, PLAN wins without dispute in this regard. If you're talking about operating modern vessels, then so far, the JMSDF has the edge. The PLAN has only just begun to introduce modern vessels into their fleet on a large scale. Their doctrine for the operation of these vessels might be outdated in light of the improvement in capabilities that the newer vessels possess. However, China is known for being quick to adapt to basically anything, its economic and scientific development should be an obvious testament to that. The experience advantage that JMSDF has in operating modern vessels will quickly be mitigated in the near future as more and more PLAN sailors serve on-board these newer vessels.

I agree that Japan for now still has the strongest navy in Asia and perhabs the second strongest in the world. It would certainly take more than 5 years or 2020 for China to catch up. And don't forget its not just the ships but there is also a air element to naval power. And i'm not only talking about the AC's and LHD's but special mission planes for surveillance, ELINT, AEW and ASW. Japan is much stronger than China in that department even more so than in the ships department as China is now only getting started in the past few years. But none the less looking from Japan they are starting to feel the heat of China's military modernization.

...going back to the 054/HQ-7 discussion...

Although a frigate has numerous roles to perform, AAW/AD is important because aircraft has been the largest threat to warships since WW2. A ship might out-run another ship (or even a torpedo, if fast enough), but not a strike aircraft.

There seems to be an assumption that the HQ-7 system is obsolete and should be replaced by something newer, such as the HQ-10. Indeed the system (Crotale) dates back to 1970s, but the French has made incremental improvements since.

Citing Naval Institute guide to world naval weapons systems (2006) by Norman Friedman, pages 572-573, the modernized Crotale NG system with VT-1 missile has Mach 3.6 speed, improved range, and is designed to intercept up to 4 sea-skimming missiles at once. In 1998 Thompson-CSF Airsys partnered with Fakel (Russia) to design a cold gas ejection system for the VT-1, and 4 VT-1 missiles can be quad-packed in a single Aster VLS cell.

CNPMIEC (China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp) had also been busy in making the improved FM-90 variant. I do not know what variant of the HQ-7 is deployed on the 054 and how well it compares to the French VT-1. Though the HQ-7 will never provide the same local area AD capability as HQ-16, the latest HQ-7 variants might not be as obsolete as some would think it is.

deleting the continued china vs japn discussions.

On 054A, we are continuing to see 8th, 9th and 10th 054A at HD shipyard. Since it looks ready and was launched last November, the 8th HD 054A (Sanya) should be joining service pretty soon.

Over at HP shipyard, it looks like 9th 054A still hasn't been launched yet. It's stuck in the launching phase.

Yes, i did wonder that..........as the 9th 054A was shown with all the usual ceremonial flags etc on it outside the hallway at HP shipyard.............but i havnt seen pictures of it in the water.

Anyway, according to HSH and other Chinese military sources..............they consider in their opinion that the ship has been launched!
