Complex power conditioning in which AC motors of varying frequency and voltage are fed from a DC or AC catenary or a diesel alternator have been used on railways for about a quarter of a century and I would expect that AC motors have been used in submarines perhaps even longer. In submarines that would increase efficiency and save weight just as it does in railway practice.

From reports from a Chinese military website...........the forthcoming 054B Frigate is to have a displacement of around 5000-6000 tonnes, equivalent to earlier Chinese series Destroyers.
The vessels main difference over the type 054A is that the ship is to have an integrated electric-propulsion system, which the Chinese have been working on for some time.
Obviously, attention has been made to making the ship more stealthier than the 054A.
Among weapons suites, the ship is supposedly to be armed with the C805 anti-ship missile with a range of 380km, and its anti-aircraft missiles will be the HHQ-16C or D variants with a claimed range of 120km.
There were a host of other things, but i cant remember them!
Unfortunately, there were no build numbers or dates specified!

There are dozens of fanboy sites with claims on this military programme or that, and as of now there's nothing credible about this claim in relation to others, and the only consistent fact we know about "054B" is that its an ongoing programme.
