054/A FFG Thread II

I would say 2 more are on the cards to complete 6 FFG Flotillas that's two for each fleet of a modern FFG design

I think that's it for this year, unless we are very lucky we might not see anymore, next year should compete the FFG production run and the next iteration should emerge if that's indeed the Type 054B of which they could build up a 3rd FFG Flotilla for each fleet leading onwards from the Type 054A, that would mean 8-12 units of the Type 054B

The design of the Type 054B should enable more flexibilty to allow for launching of UAV, under water vehicles, mine clearing, insertion of special forces and everything that a 21st century FFG needs

Also include a universal VLS that has multi role capability, maybe adding in a 48 VLS is out of the question but certainly giving it land attack capability would enhance its scope of operations

Type 052D is a huge improvement over the Type 052C as such the Type 054B should be a huge improvement over the Type 054A

As 20 054s and 40 056s put into service. I think for the 054B we need many years to wait .

Indeed 2 more to go, however the requirement of follow up design (proposed 054B) will be depend on the regional situation. There might be a possibility that PLAN will move to high displacement ships (DDGs - 052Ds/CGs - 055s).

However, if PLAN go for further FFGs (054B) & to accommodate your proposed improvements then the displacement would be increased to 5000 - 5500 tons & Yes the numbers would 12 for 3 flotilla's.

True but if you take a look at the number of ships needing decommissioned over the next few years then it's doesn't seem like a lot

"adding capacity" may not be on the cards but just matching the decommissioning rate could allow for Type 054B to slip in

Anyway no such ship even exists on paper nor have we ever heard a Type 054B design, we are just assuming this based on logical thinking which we know doesnt always apply to PLAN which is why its exciting to follow PLAN compared with other navy's

True.........but there has been some discussion on Chinese miltary websites recently on the subject of the 054B with the usual images.

But.....in reality, as the 054A has been in production for some while now, i think we can assume that a successor class is at least at the design stage now!

Also true

For example for Type 056 we always kind of knew that a corvette was on the cards after Thailand deal but for things like Type 052D it came right out the blue

For Type 054B we are somewhere in the middle

can someone remind me as to how many crew the type 54 requires?

are they planning any asw upgrades for the ffg?

Crew is about 250, and they are already very good multi-mission FFGs, with very good ASW capabilities. There is no specific ASW upgrade planned that I am aware of. They have an ASW helicopter, ASW torpedo launchers, ASW rocket launchers, bow active and passive sonar, VLS anti submarine missiles, etc. There have been statements to the effect that they also have a TAS capability, but I do not know if that has been confirmed. If they do not, that is the only upgrade I could think of.
