I would say changing the VLS to the same system as the Type 052D which could carry ASW missiles is another possible upgrade. Though I'm not sure if that would be considered a type 054B at that point.

I would point to the British Type 23 mid life upgrade, to replace Sea Wolf VLS with CAMM. The CAMM missiles can be quad packed in th same space as a Sea Wolf missile module. This means the ship with 32 Sea Wolf VLS could potentially be upgraded to 128 round CAMM/Sea Ceptor missiles.

For ASW upgrades I think we need to look at future Chinese Navy ASW helicopters. This is one area that seems to be lagging.

Supposedly, the existing VLS on the Type 054A can fire both the AAW missile and their ASW missile...but no quad pack AAW missiles and no anti-surface missile. So, if that is true, the ASW missile upgrade is not necessary.

Jeff any pictures of Type 054A launching ASW from its VLS?

That's what the captain of one of the Sov ships said. At that time, he also mentioned 054A has TAS, which we were not sure about. We have now seen that 054A has both TAS and towed decoy. And we are told that the common VLS on 052D will be able to fire ASW missile. Although, we have not seen this mysterious missile yet, it seems like things point toward ASW missiles being able to be launched from 054A's VLS (or maybe even missile tubes for all i know). Again, we have not seen this missile, but it seems to me that this capability already exists.

Someone who went on a 54A on an "open to public" day and shot a pic of the description of the VLS system and the description mentioned it contains both anti-air and anti-sub missiles. You'll have to dig it up in here or CDF
