054/A FFG Thread II

Hey Asif, I'm curious, does Pakistan has or planning to acquire any of China's Type 054 ships? I can't find a definite article online about it. Thanks.

Unlikely. Pakistan has always wanted specialised, dedicated versions for weapons systems they import, and have never compromised on quality or capability, for them, taking the 054s would be like taking hand-me-downs, which they would be unlikely to accept.

The 054s would also be fitted with PLAN equipment and systems, which not only would the PLAN not want to be exported, but would also be of limited use to the PN even if exported as they may not interface well with the PN's other assets, and in this day and age, any ship or fighter that cannot function as part of an integrated network is of limited use and survivability.

The weapons layout of the 054 means it does not bring anything the PN's F22Ps does not already provide, what the 054 have over the F22Ps is range and endurance since the 054 is an ocean going blue water warship whereas the F22P is more of a green water coastal defence ship. The PN is currently equipped and geared for a green water defensive strategy, so the 054's biggest strength is of limited use to the PN.

If the PN were to buy a large modern FFG, I think only the 054A would interests them, maybe not even that, since the first gen hot launch VLS installed only have limited munitions options, and the blue water orientation of the 054A have the same issue as the 054 in that it does not really mesh well with the way the PN is geared to operate. I suspect if and when the PLAN brings out an 054B with the new second gen cold launch VLS installed with a much wider selection of weapons, especially a quad packable SAM and long range SAM, that might really get the PN interested enough to devote the large chunk of their budget needed to purchase and operate such ships.

The HQ-16 missiles of the Type 054A is a joint development project between Russia and China to upgrade the naval Shtil (Buk) missile system over a decade ago. Is China today able to build and upgrade these missiles without the Russian's ? Or are the Russian's today still involved with the HQ-16 ?

That's because there's no such plans, the Type 054 would need so much work and conversion it would be easier to build a new FFG, what was posted before was just rumours

People's Republic of China - HQ-16 (Hongqi-16) - Joint People's Republic of China/Russian project to upgrade the naval 9K37M1-2 system 'Shtil' (SA-N-12). Other sources also indicate the project involved some Buk technology. It is able to engage high altitude and very low flying targets. The most visual distinction between SA-17 and HQ-16 is that the latter is truck based instead of track based SA-17, and the fire power is increased by 50% with the total number of missiles increased to six from the original four in SA-17 system.

Interesting pic.

Depending on whether this section truly goes all away acrposs whatever vessel it is intended for, and depending on what that width is, would tell us if it was, for example for a Type 056 or a Type 054A.

Clealry, no doubt HD is going to continue building military vessels, and this looks like a military section. Will be interesting to see if another Type 054A begins to form up there.
