These days DDGs are usually 6000 tons + (Not always because some countries, like France for example, calls pretty much all of their major surface combatatnts Frigates, even the Horizons). Thanks chaps for the list of 054A build.
Talking of Frigates, i see it was announced in the UK press yesterday with images, that the Type 26 frigate (combat ship) is going to have a displacement of some 5400 tonnes............thats a pretty big Frigate, isnt it? Just hope we build it in sufficient numbers.

Yes, i realise the designation of warships in relation to their displacement seems less obvious these days..........i mean even the US Navy is calling the new 'Zumwalts' Destroyers, but dont they have a displacement of around 14,000 tons....perhaps they should be called pocket battleships
I remember the days when Corvettes were around 1,500 tons, Frigates 2,500 tons, Destoyers 4,500 tons and anything larger was a Cruiser!

Anyhow, the key if the very high functionality, multi-mission capability, and weapons load out these Type 26 FFgs will have. They are very close to DDGs in weapons layout, and in fact, exceed some countries DDGs in that regard.
Sadly, it seems like the RN is planning to build only 13 or so of them to replace all of theType 23 FFGs. IMHO, with the smaller than expected build of the Type 45s, the UK should build 24 of these vessels at least. They are going to be very nice just the same.
I just wish they would start coming online before 2020. They could start pumping them out, IMHO, in 2016 or so.
UK is big on aircraft carriers and love their submarines that's why we are seeing 7 x Astutes and BAE just got £350 million for design and development of a new class of SSBN to replace the Vanguards which we will still likely to get 4 of but the final decision will come in 2016
But Royal Navy will compromise surface fleet but never the subsurface fleet we have operated 7 x SSNs and 4 x SSBNs and by the looks of it we will still operate 11 nuclear submarines in the coming decades
Ministry of defence has put aside almost £20 billion for just 4 new SSBNs, that's more than $30 billion, that's enough for 4-5 QE aircraft carriers or 15 x Type 45 DDGs, we have the money and the expertise we just don't have the people at the top who know what hey are doing, government if full of people doing back hand deals and corruption leading the country down hill
