Thanks chaps for the list of 054A build.

Talking of Frigates, i see it was announced in the UK press yesterday with images, that the Type 26 frigate (combat ship) is going to have a displacement of some 5400 tonnes............thats a pretty big Frigate, isnt it? Just hope we build it in sufficient numbers.
These days DDGs are usually 6000 tons + (Not always because some countries, like France for example, calls pretty much all of their major surface combatatnts Frigates, even the Horizons).

Anyhow, the key if the very high functionality, multi-mission capability, and weapons load out these Type 26 FFgs will have. They are very close to DDGs in weapons layout, and in fact, exceed some countries DDGs in that regard.

Sadly, it seems like the RN is planning to build only 13 or so of them to replace all of theType 23 FFGs. IMHO, with the smaller than expected build of the Type 45s, the UK should build 24 of these vessels at least. They are going to be very nice just the same.

I just wish they would start coming online before 2020. They could start pumping them out, IMHO, in 2016 or so.

Kinda hard to build that much toy for UK, when they can't print their own money like US does, and letting the world accept it as legal tender.

It is already amazing the kind of military they have base on their economy.

that is the model of previous design iteration. new design is different, a bit smaller and compact, sort of looking like oversized Freedom LCS class.

Yes, the updated design as released recently (i.e. can be found at UK MOD) does look a lot better than the images posted here on previous posts. Yes, i think we must have at least 13 of these ships, should be 16 really if MOD is replacing like for like with the previous Type 23 as that was the original class size, before goverment of the time sold off 3 virtually newish ships to Chile in so called defence cuts in 2004.

I still think, the UK could do with another 2 Type 45 Destroyers, as the 6 we have are gonna be worked very hard in the coming years....but i dont think that will happen, even if the goverment found a stash of money, as all the shipyards seem to be engaged at the present building modules for the 2 aircraft carriers.

Yes, i realise the designation of warships in relation to their displacement seems less obvious these days..........i mean even the US Navy is calling the new 'Zumwalts' Destroyers, but dont they have a displacement of around 14,000 tons....perhaps they should be called pocket battleships

I remember the days when Corvettes were around 1,500 tons, Frigates 2,500 tons, Destoyers 4,500 tons and anything larger was a Cruiser!

Agreed, Type 26 has lots of overlap with he Type 45 which I is why they cut the DDG order from 12 then 10 then finally 8 of them then just for fun down to just 6 units

There's no way we could get 10 or 12 but we could have definetly got 8, it was such a stupid idea to make 6 because that didnt justify the cost, infact making just 6 was more expensive than making 8 because of the development cost split, when making ships it's easy to let the production run as everything is in place

13 Type 23 frigates serve the royal navy so 13 Type 26 will replace them, there's no chance of getting more than 13 infact if anything they might even cut this order down to 11 or 10 depending on the economy in 8 years time

UK is big on aircraft carriers and love their submarines that's why we are seeing 7 x Astutes and BAE just got £350 million for design and development of a new class of SSBN to replace the Vanguards which we will still likely to get 4 of but the final decision will come in 2016

But Royal Navy will compromise surface fleet but never the subsurface fleet we have operated 7 x SSNs and 4 x SSBNs and by the looks of it we will still operate 11 nuclear submarines in the coming decades

Ministry of defence has put aside almost £20 billion for just 4 new SSBNs, that's more than $30 billion, that's enough for 4-5 QE aircraft carriers or 15 x Type 45 DDGs, we have the money and the expertise we just don't have the people at the top who know what hey are doing, government if full of people doing back hand deals and corruption leading the country down hill

That's because if they ever, EVER put their SSBNs onto the chopping block that's the end of UK's nuclear state status...it might win applause from hippies and treehuggers, but it does no good to UK's national status.

Until they start to build orbital-based ion cannon or anti-matter munition delivered by hypersonic bombers, whoever has nukes will keep hoarding it, and whoever doesn't have it yet will keep trying their damn best to get at least a few.

But I think that's enough of off-topic stuff, before the fat pilot comes back let's get back to topic, shall we?

Maybe ask the crews of the ARA Belgrano, the Falklands war put the Great back into Great Britain, everyone even the Argentinians thought Britain was finished, even the Americans did not think UK would take back the islands but they did
